What kind of boutique hotel is Villa Sanjomuromachi KYOTO?
This is like a hideaway for adults. There are 12 rooms only. We didn’t see other guests during our stay. The property emphasizes private experiences for each guest.
If you are looking for a sophisticated boutique hotel in Kyoto, I would recommend it. Alternatively, if this is your first visit to Kyoto, you may want to stay here. The location is convenient when you go sightseeing and has great access to public transportation.
On the other hand, if you are a connoisseur of Kyoto, I wouldn’t recommend it as the location is not very much Kyoto. I would rather recommend staying in the Higashiyama area.
The exterior of the building is like an apartment but once we entered the property, we felt relaxed. The boutique hotel is great for solo travelers, couples, or business persons. The hotel with a relaxed environment that women can feel comfortable staying even alone.
Is the location easy to access?
Yes, it’s very easy. The location is in the center of Kyoto city. The hotel is near Karasuma Oike Station, just a 3min-walk. Alternatively, it takes 15min from Kyoto Station by Taxi and costs around 1,500JPY. Please note that most of the TAXI drivers wouldn’t know the small hotel. You might want to show a map of where it’s located and the hotel’s phone number. Alternatively, these days, many cab drivers enter the phone number into the car navigation system to confirm the destination. If you are worried about this, please show the drivers the address and tel No. in Japanese below.

The rooms I would recommend?
If you are going to stay here, I would recommend a deluxe room facing the west side, or a deluxe room on the east side facing Muromachi Street. You can see quaint white walls of traditional warehouses and machiya houses from the spacious window. Other rooms may not have a good view because the hotel itself is located next to buildings on both sides.
Then facilities are the latest. Everything, such as decorations, furniture, and interior, etc., is stylish. The room is spacious, functional, and user-friendly. The housekeeping was excellent.
How about toiletries & in-room amenities?
All of the amenities are taken care of including enough toiletries, pajamas, bathrobes, a green tea set, bottled water, coffee bags, and tea bags, etc. There are PROVINSCIA amenities in the bathroom. Also, iPads, DVD players, air cleaners, cribs, and umbrellas, etc., are available for borrowing. The wifi reception was great on the property.
How about In-house Facilities?
The property is almost a universal design. If you bring someone with weak legs, you may want to inform the staff in advance.

Then there is a small cozy lobby lounge on 1F. You can order wine, beer, Japanese sake, coffee, and tea, etc.
There is no communal bath, no spa, no swimming pool, and no gym in-house.
How about meals?
The food for breakfast was good. The portion tends to be small. You can choose either Western or Japanese cuisine. You can also choose where you want to have breakfast, either in your room or in the lobby lounge. Room service is available only for breakfast.
Alternatively, you can go out for meals. There are many restaurants and cafes around there. There is a convenience store nearby. Most of the restaurants in Kyoto city are open from 11:00 AM.
The staff is helpful, attentive, and informative. If this is your first visit to Kyoto, you may want to ask the staff about the recommended spots, restaurants, cafes, etc.
Overall, the price range would be reasonable. The hotel is perfect if you are looking for a modern boutique hotel in Kyoto city.
If I had to pick one drawback, it would be that the atmosphere around the hotel is not very much Kyoto-like. This area is just a normal, common street. I always stay in the Higashiyama area. Because it has a very much Kyoto-like atmosphere, but since I didn’t have time to move around on this trip, I chose this boutique hotel in a convenient location in Kyoto City.
The Higashiyama area has a very nice atmosphere, but the traffic is not very convenient. If you are staying in Kyoto for a short period of time, I would recommend staying at a hotel near a train station where you can get around efficiently.
At last, if you stay here, I would recommend joining Kyo Yuzen Workshops after breakfast which is the traditional dyeing technique of Kyoto. The location of the workshop is nearby. It just takes 10min on foot. We enjoyed it so much more than we expected.
