What kind of city hotel is The Ritz Carlton Kyoto?
The Ritz Carlton Tokyo, Osaka, and Okinawa are wonderful and highly satisfying, but The Ritz Carlton Kyoto is exceptional among them.
Walking around the hotel, you will encounter a lot of art. This is like a museum, so it’s a sight to behold.
At the entrance, a narrow path and a stream of water designed to look like a stream create an elegant and modern ambiance typical of Kyoto. The ambiance is especially enhanced during the cherry blossom season and the autumn foliage season when you can feel the four seasons.
Then after passing through the entrance, a beautiful and noble Japanese-style space spreads out. It is a calm space that is not too flashy but gives you a sense of presence. You can see the cloisonné patterns of ceramic tiles on the walls, which create beautiful shadows under the indirect lighting.
Then you will be greeted by an elegant female staff member who is perfectly dressed in a kimono.
In the past few years, foreign luxury hotels have been opening one after another, and it seems as if every hotel is operating with only a minimum number of staff due to the shortage of manpower, but the behavior, walking, speaking, and attentiveness of the staff working here were true “The Ritz-Carlton people.”
During my stay, I was soothed by the wonderful hospitality and resourcefulness created by each and every staff member.
Then this is also one of the best 5-star hotels in Kyoto for families with small children. If you request in advance, the staff will provide amenities, cribs, and yukata for small children. Babysitting services are also available for an additional fee.
Also, there are free activities for children. This is a very convenient service because while the children are participating in the activities, the adults can have some time to themselves.
If I had to pick one drawback, it would be the location. The hotel has a great view of the Kamo River, and the local shopping district is a short walk away, so it’s a convenient location. However, compared to the Higashiyama area, the surrounding area seems to lack the Kyoto feel.
Is the location easy to access?
Yes, it’s easy. It takes just 5min on foot from Kyoto Shiyakusho-Mae Station. Alternatively, it takes 15min by TAXI from Kyoto station costs around 2,000JPY.
On weekends and holidays during the tourist seasons of spring and fall, Kyoto City is crowded and the roads are often congested. Whenever possible, it is best to take the train rather than a cab or bus.
Where is the best accommodation for anniversaries in Kyoto?
If you are looking for a good place for a special occasion, the property is one of the best. The staff arranges flowers and cakes to celebrate an anniversary at additional charges if you request in advance.

Rooms I would recommend?
If you are going to stay here, I would recommend that you get a room on the highest floor possible with a view of the Kamo River. You can see the peaceful scenery of Kyoto while relaxing in your room. We had hoped to have a room along the Kamo River, but it was not possible because it was the season of autumn leaves. If you want to stay in a room along the Kamo River, it would be best to book early.
Then it seems that there are some rooms facing a cemetery on the west side. The view from the rooms on the town side is of ordinary apartments and a cemetery.
How about toiletries & in-room amenities?
All of the amenities are taken care of including enough toiletries, yukatas, bathrobes, a coffee machine with capsules, welcome fruit, baked cakes, and a green tea set. A Blu-ray player, a DVD player, and an air cleaner were placed. Room service is available for 24H. Free Wifi reception was good in the building. Turn-down service is available. There is a convenience store nearby.
How about In-house Facilities?
The property has a wonderful swimming pool, gym, saunas, and hot water baths on B2 which you can use for free whenever you like. Swimwear, swim cap, and swim goggles are available for borrowing. The swimming pool is open between 6:00 and 22:00. It’s a minimum age requirement of 5 applies. *If you have tattoos, you may not be permitted to use the public bathing area.
The gym is open for 24H. It’s a minimum age requirement of 16 applies.
Unluckily there is no executive club lounge to relax while drinking and eating.
Then the hotel is a perfect universal design. There are some rooms for wheelchair users and wheelchairs are available for borrowing. If you bring someone with weak legs, you may want to inform the staff in advance as they can arrange a room near the lift.

How about services?
Some free activities are available. We took an early morning cycling tour. A tour guide brings you to some well-known spots in the city. We participated twice, the first day we cycled around the Higashiyama area and the second day we cycled around Fushimi-Inari. Since it was early in the morning on both days, there were hardly any tourists despite the fact that they are the popular tourist spots. The atmosphere was completely different from that of the daytime, so it was a lot of fun. It was worth getting up early to go.
The cycling tour took 90 minutes and was offered in two parts: 6:30 AM to 8:00 AM and 8:30 AM to 10:00 AM.
Then the staff can offer free activities for small children, such as Origami, Balloon art, and Treasure hunt, etc. You need to book all of them in advance by e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org
How about meals?
The buffet-style breakfast is one of the best in Japan. You can choose either buffet-style western or Japanese course breakfast. All ingredients were very high-end. You won’t be able to resist even you are full. Don’t forget to bring your empty stomach. I always eat Japanese food in the morning, but this time I decided to eat Western food. I wanted to try Pierre Hermé’s croissants. It was not too sweet as I expected, and the outside was crispy and the inside was moist.
Then there are many restaurants, cafes, and fast food shops around there. Most of them are open from 10:00 AM or 11:00 AM. You can go out for lunch and dinner.
If your priority is to enjoy the gym, pool, and spa at a 5-star luxury hotel and relax in your room overlooking the Kamo River, rather than touring Kyoto from place to place, then the Ritz-Carlton, Kyoto is the perfect place for you. The facilities, service, and hospitality are impeccable. Spending time in a 5-star luxury hotel in an ancient city will be an unforgettable experience in your life.
