This wouldn’t be luxury ryokan. The building tends to be outdated. However, I would recommend it if you plan to stay on Miyajima island. It’s really worth it. If you are going to stay here, you might want to book a deluxe twin bedroom with views of the pagoda and shrine. That’s really amazing. Some rooms including the deluxe ones already renovated in 2015, so the facilities tend to be new. It seems that others haven’t done it yet and they tend to be very tired. Don’t book them. The western room is cozy, functional, and clean. If you prefer beds to Japanese-style mattresses, this would be for you. Also, there are some rooms with private opened-air baths at the balconies. They tend to be small, not hot springs, and not charming. I wouldn’t recommend them as there are large public baths in the building. About food experience is supposed to be fish-based cooking, mainly served seafood with a lot of local ingredients. If you don’t like it, you might want to request beef instead. Maybe it would cost additional. Perhaps, you can go out for dinner as there are some restaurants nearby. The staff knows some recommended ones. Then if you have specific requests, you might want to send e-mail arimoto@miyajima-arimoto.co.jp in advance as much as possible. It seems that there might be a shortage of staff here all year round. Also, English speakers would be only a few. Then it wouldn’t be easy to find the entrance of the property. You might want to ask for a shuttle bus and pick you up at Miyajima Sanbashi. Also, the check-in time of 3 PM was very strict. When we arrived there around 2:30 PM, we had to wait until 3 PM. Therefore, don’t visit there early before 3 PM. Actually, this would be very common in Japan. If staff allows you to use rooms before check-in time, you might be just lucky. Anyway as you know, the island is very beautiful especially, fall season. Absolutory here is one of the popular spots in Japan. Therefore I would say that many ryokans tend to depend on the World Heritage Site, Itsukushima Shrine. Improve their service might be not the first priority. However, Miyajima Grand Hotel Arimoto wouldn’t be such kind of property. We can see during the stay that staffs constantly strive to provide for guests who have a good time here. In token of that, they offer some interesting activities, such as walking tours for the early morning and night, piano live concert, and picture-story shows, etc., You must join them if you stay here. At last, some people say that you must visit the island, but you don’t need to stay at hotels in Miyajima. To be frank, I don’t agree with that. Because you can find something special when you take a walk around here at night and in the early morning, NOT daytime. You almost have the island to yourself. I hope you would experience all the beauties of it before you leave. Have a nice trip!
