What kind of onsen ryokan is Ginrinsou in Otaru?
This is a luxury authentic ryokan in Otaru. If you are looking for an authentic top-notch ryokan adventure in Otaru, Hokkaido, the onsen ryokan would be one of the best. This is like a SAMURAI residence or history museum. If you are a connoisseur of Japan, it’s well worth a visit. The experience is pure Japan and should definitely be tried. Ginrinsou must leave a lasting impression. On the other hand, if this is your first time staying at ryokans, this is not. You may feel overpriced when you check out. You may want to stay in modern ryokans. Ginrinsou would be great for couples, family, or solo travelers. The property completely emphasizes private experiences for each guest.

Is the location easy to access?
The location is on the top of the hill and a bit inconvenient, but free shuttle service is available from Otaruchikko Station. You need to book it in advance. It takes just 5min by car from the station.
Rooms I would recommend?
If you are going to stay here, I would recommend rooms with private hot springs in the new building on a high floor possible. Because you can view a magnificent blue ocean while chilling out at the room and soaking in the private bath. That’s precious time. On the other hand, I wouldn’t recommend the rooms in the main building. Because views from the rooms wouldn’t be nice if compared to the new building. The room is excellent Japanese minimalistic, so spacious, and cozy. If you don’t want to sleep on Japanese-style mattresses in tatami rooms, you may want to book a room with twin beds on tatami mats.
How about toiletries & in-room amenities?
The Free Wi-Fi reception was good in the property. Then all of the amenities are taken care of including enough toiletries, a green tea set, yukatas, and a complimentary mini-bar including beer. Room service is not available. The housekeeping is excellent.
How about In-house Facilities?
Overall, facilities tend to be the latest. There are indoor and outdoor communal hot springs. You can see beautiful sunset and sunrise while soaking in the outdoor bath in good weather. All of them are open from 6:00 to 24:00. It seems that most of the guests used their private hot springs in their rooms only, so we didn’t see anyone around the communal bathing area even though the property was fully booked. *If you have tattoos, you may not be permitted to use the communal bathing area. Then, this is not a universal design and there are some steps, but a western Japanese-style room has electric folding beds. Wheelchairs are available for borrowing. If you bring people with weak feet, you may want to inform the staff in advance. Then there is no convenience store within walking distance. You may want to buy your necessities before coming here.

How about meals?
Ginrinsou is one of the well-known auberge ryokans in Otaru, Hokkaido. Authentic French cuisine was just divine. If you are a gourmet, you should try it. *The French restaurant is closed on Wednesdays. If you stay on Wednesday, a Japanese Kaiseki dinner using much seafood is served. Then breakfast is served Japanese cuisine only. There is no option for western food. After breakfast, coffee was served at the lounge and we enjoyed the view of Otaru bay. All meals are served in a private room or a dining area. *Please note that inform the staff when you book a room with meals if you have any food allergies. They probably wouldn’t be able to prepare alternative food if you request on that day. Then there is no restaurant near the property. You may want to book a room including meals unless you have a car.
