What kind of onsen ryokan is Kuriya Suizan?
This is a luxury modern ryokan with private hot springs in Jozankei Onsen, Hokkaido. There are 14 rooms only. This is like a secret hideaway for adults. Absolutely the ryokan completely emphasizes private experiences for each guest. The surrounding neighborhood would be so quiet even though there are so many tourists on the main street. Once you enter the property, it’s like you’re in another world. Also, this is one of the well-known gourmet ryokans. If you are a foodie, the ryokan would be amazing. The ambiance is serene, tranquil, and relaxed. Kuriya Suizan would be for couples, solo travelers, business persons, or small groups, but not family with small children. *A minimum age requirement of 13 applies.

Rooms I would recommend?
If you are going to stay here, I would recommend a room with a private hot spring. The room is spacious, functional, and comfortable. The décor is excellent Japanese minimalistic. If you don’t want to sleep on Japanese-style mattresses called futon in tatami rooms, you may want to book a western Japanese-style room with twin beds on tatami mats.
How about toiletries & in-room amenities?
All of the amenities are taken care of including enough toiletries, samue outfits, yukatas, bathrobes, tea bags, a complimentary minibar including beer, sweets, and a coffee machine with capsules, etc. Also, there were Mikimoto amenities in the bathroom. Room service is not available. There is no convenience store nearby. You may want to buy your necessities before coming here. The free WiFi reception was excellent.
How about In-house Facilities?
There are indoor and outdoor communal hot springs in-house. The spring quality is very thick, creamy, and moist, like skin lotion. They are open from 6:00 to 11:00, 15:00 to 26:00. On top of that, you can use communal hot springs in the sister inn, “Suizantei Club Jozankei”. The staff sends you to the venue between 15:00 to 22:00. Also, you can use a private family hot spring in the sister inn too. It costs JPY3,000 for 40min. *Please note that if you have tattoos and want to use the communal baths, book a room with a private one or use reserved private family one instead. Then Kuriya Suizan is not a universal design. There are some steps. There is no lift. If you bring people with weak feet, you may want to book a room with a private hot spring on 1F. You wouldn’t need to move around once you enter your room. Then there is a very cozy lounge. Complimentary drinks and finger food on 2F, such as coffee, tea, grapefruit juice, Japanese sake, beer, whiskey, cheesecake, marmalade, quiche, fruit yogurt, and homemade potato crisps, etc. are available. Each dish is of high quality. You can sit back and relax here whenever you like. That’s precious time.

How about meals?
Japanese kaiseki food experience for dinner and breakfast is just divine. All meals tend to be truly sophisticated. If you are a gourmet, you must be so excited. Dinner starts from 18:00 or 19:30. Breakfast starts from 8:00, 8:30, or 9:30. All meals are served in a dining area. The dining has an open-style kitchen which can be seen by guests. You can see their skillful performance and master craftsmanship during dinner. That’s interesting. After dinner, some sushi pockets for a night snack were served. *Please note that inform the staff when you book a room with meals if you have any food allergies. They probably wouldn’t be able to prepare alternative food if you request on that day. Then, as far as I know, there wouldn’t be nice restaurants around the property. You may want to book a room including meals.
