Wakamatsu Hot Spring Resort

Wakamatsu Hot Spring Resort

What kind of onsen ryokan is Wakamatsu Hot Spring Resort?

The property is also called Kappo ryokan Wakamatsu.  This is an authentic small ryokan in Hakodate.  There are 22 rooms only.  Absolutely the ryokan completely emphasizes private experiences for each guest.  You can get much of an immersive “Traditional Ryokan” experience as you expect.  Staff welcomed us very warmly and we were escorted to a beautiful tatami room.  On the other hand, if you are looking for modern ryokans, this is not.  The ambiance is serene, charming, and quaint.  Everything, such as architecture, interior, and decorations, etc., is truly traditional.  If you are a connoisseur of Japan, you must be excited.  The ryokan would be great for couples, families, small groups, business persons, or solo travelers.

Is the location easy to access?

Yes, it would be easy.  It takes 7min by TAXI from Hakodate Airport.  It costs around JPY1,000.  It takes 15min by TAXI from JR Hakodate Station.  It costs around JPY1,500.  Alternatively, it takes 40min by streetcar from JR Hakodate Station and gets off at Yunokawa-Onsen station, and then a 10min-walk to the property.  A free shuttle service is not available.

Rooms I would recommend?

Wakamatsu Hot Spring Resort
If you are going to stay here, I would recommend Japanese-style rooms in the main building.  You can enjoy white noise from the ocean.  The décor is excellent minimalistic and truly relaxing.  Facilities tend to be the latest.  If you don’t want to sleep on Japanese-style mattresses called futon in tatami rooms, you may want to book a room with twin beds on tatami mats.

How about toiletries & in-room amenities?

All of the amenities are taken care of including minimum toiletries, yukatas, a coffee machine with capsules, bottled water, and a Japanese tea set, etc.  Each room has an iPad with a speaker.  The free WiFi reception was good in the property.  If you visit Hokkaido in the winter season, you may want to request a humidifier as it’s very dry.   Room service is available from 17:00-21:00.   Also, this is child-friendly.  Staff provides meals, yukatas, and futons for small children if you request in advance.

How about In-house Facilities?

There are indoor and outdoor communal hot springs.  They are open from 5:00-9:30, 15:00-25:00.  The spring quality is great.  The water temperature tends to be lukewarm.  *If you have tattoos, you may not be permitted to use the communal bathing area.  Then Wakamatsu Hot Spring Resort is not universal design.  A wheelchair is available for borrowing.  If you bring people with week feat, you may want to inform the staff in advance as they can arrange a room near the entrance.   Then there is a convenience store nearby.

How about meals?

This is one of the gourmet ryokans.  Kyoto-style kaiseki food experiences for dinner and breakfast was wonderful.  I would say that the food is equivalent to Michelin 1 or 2.  If you are a gourmet, you should try it.  All local ingredients were so fresh and well presented.  The portion tends to be small but after dinner, some rice balls were served for a night snack.  All meals are served in your room.  *Please note that inform the staff when you book a room with meals if you have any food allergies.  They probably wouldn’t be able to prepare alternative food if you request on that day.  Alternatively, you can go out for meals as there are some local restaurants around there.

My impressions

All staff is professional, proactive, and elegant.  If you want to experience signature Japanese hospitality, this ryokan would be the best place.  Overall, the price range would be reasonable.  If you are keen on Japanese culture, it’s well worth staying here.  Then if you stay in Hakodate in the winter season, you should visit Hakodate Tropical Botanical GardenRefer to the information.  You can see many adorable monkeys.  They fully enjoy hot springs.  The location is near Wakamatsu Hot Spring Resort.  Have a nice trip!  Welcome to receive any questions about the property from the below space.  You need to inform the staff of your expected arrival time in advance.  Check availability and pricing for the ryokan on Booking.com or Agoda
