What kind of onsen ryokan is Kissho Yamanaka?
This is a typical onsen ryokan in Yamanaka Onsen. This ryokan wouldn’t be luxury, but very cozy. The property has great value for money if compared to others in Kanazawa. Once we arrived at the property, the staff welcomed us warmly, and delicious pancakes with English tea were served at the teppanyaki restaurant as a welcome dessert. A young chef baked the pancakes on an iron plate in front of us. That’s a nice service. Don’t miss it. The pancake service is between 14:30 and 16:00. Kissho Yamanaka would be great for couples, families, groups, business persons, or solo travelers. The ambiance would be family-oriented.
Is the location easy to access?
Yes, it would be easy. Free shuttle service is available from Kagaonsen Station or Komatsu Airport. You need to book it by 3 days in advance. It takes around 30min by train from Kanazawa Station to Kagaonsen Station.
Rooms I would recommend?
If you are are going to stay here, I would recommend Japanese-style rooms with private outdoor hot springs. You can fully enjoy outdoor baths while hearing white noise from the river whenever you like. Also, I would recommend rooms with small traditional inner gardens on the mountain stream-side. Those rooms are relaxed, charming, and quaint. On the other hand, I wouldn’t recommend Western-style rooms. Because they tend to be cramped and wouldn’t be special. Then all Japanese-style rooms have no western beds. If you don’t want to sleep on Japanese-stye mattresses in tatami rooms, you may want to find others. Overall, facilities tend to be a bit worn-out, but the housekeeping was good. Check availability and pricing for the ryokan on Booking.com or Agoda
How about toiletries & in-room amenities?
All of the amenities are taken care of including enough toiletries, a green tea set, yukatas, pajamas, Japanese sweets, and a coffee mill. *If you stay in a room with a private outdoor hot spring, a complimentary mini-bar including beer is available. After check-in, we were excited to choose colorful yukatas in the lobby. There are skincare products in the bathroom. Room service is not available. The Free Wi-Fi reception was excellent in the property.
How about In-house Facilities?
There are indoor and outdoor communal hot springs with saunas. All of them are open from 6:00-11:00, 13:00-25:00. Also, there are complimentary three private family hot springs. You need to book when you check-in at the reception if you want to use them. They are open from 6:00 to 9:50, 12:00 to 23:50. On top of that, you can use communal hot springs in the sister inn, Kagari Kissyotei. The staff sends you to the venue. *If you have tattoos, you may not be permitted to use the communal bathing area. Then Kissho Yamanaka is a universal design. There are western-style rooms for wheelchair users. If you bring people with weak feet, you may want to inform the staff in advance as they can arrange a room near the lift.
How about services?
This is child-friendly. Staff provides amenities, yukatas, meals, chairs, toys, and tableware for small children if you request in advance. They can warm baby food in the microwave if you bring it. Then complimentary coffee and tea are available at the lobby lounge from 7:00-20:00. Also, complimentary beer, non-alcoholic rice juice, and popsicles were available from 16:00-18:00. Then bicycles are available for free for 2 hours. You should go cycling around Yuge Road. Also, you can get free tickets for Hot spring hopping of Yamanaka Onsen. Then after dinner, don’t forget to watch Geisha’s traditional dance at the lobby lounge from 20:45.
How about meals?
There are 2 restaurants in the property. One is teppanyaki, and the other is Kaga kaiseki. If you love Tempura, you should try Kaga kaiseki. Because you can get a free refill for Tempura. Freshly-fried tempura is simply wonderful. Don’t forget to bring your empty stomach. The portion tends to be big. If you love beef, you should try Teppanyaki. Then you can choose either Japanese or western cuisine for breakfast. When we tried Japanese food for breakfast, there was a nice buffet-style salad bar. Also, complimentary Japanese sake was available. All meals are served in a dining room or a private room. *Please note that inform the staff when you book a room with meals if you have any food allergies. They probably wouldn’t be able to prepare alternative food if you request on that day. Then, as far as I know, there is no nice restaurant around here. You may want to book a room with meals.
All staff is friendly, but they look so busy. There would be a shortage of staff during the busy season. Overall, there were plenty of great services during our stay.
