What kind of onsen ryokan is Aso no Shiki?
This is my cup of tea. The onsen ryokan wouldn’t be luxury, but truly cozy. If you are looking for small lovely ryokans near Mt. Aso in Kumamoto prefecture, you should stay here. The location is not in Kurokawa Onsen. The staff welcomed us with warmth. You wouldn’t feel like you’re checking in a ryokan, it’s like you’re being welcome back home. A small garden, beautiful flower arrangements here and there, interior and architecture, etc., create a relaxed atmosphere. The onsen ryokan would be great for family, solo travelers, couples, or small groups. There are 9 rooms only. The property with a relaxed environment that women can feel comfortable staying even alone.

How are the rooms?
Most of the rooms tend to be cramped but the housekeeping was excellent. The room was functional and Japan minimalistic. Then I noticed that the property has no latest soundproofing system. If you are a light sleeper, you may want to request a quiet room as much as possible when you book a room. My ear sometimes caught the children’s voice and footsteps from next-door. Then if you don’t want to sleep on Japanese mattresses called futon in tatami rooms, you may want to find others. There is no room with western beds. Also, there is no room with a private hot spring.
How about toiletries & in-room amenities?
All of the amenities are taken care of including minimum toiletries, yukatas, and a green tea set, etc. The free WiFi reception was sometimes slow. Room service is not available. There is a vending machine for drinks. Complimentary coffee is available in the lobby. There is no convenience store nearby. You might want to buy your necessities before coming here. This is child-friendly. Staff provides meals, amenities, chairs, and yukatas if you request in advance. There would be some families with small children, especially weekends.
How about In-house Facilities?
There are 4 private family hot springs which all guests can use for free whenever they are not occupied. All of them are open for 24 hours. You should try all of them. The water temperature tends to be a bit high. The spring quality was nice. There is no communal hot spring. Then, Aso no Shiki is not a universal design. Wheelchairs are not available for borrowing. There is no lift. I wouldn’t recommend it if you bring people with weak feet. Then the property is pet-friendly. If you want to bring your dogs, you need to inform the staff in advance.

How about meals?
The local food experience for dinner and breakfast was just divine. The portion tends to be big. Don’t forget to bring your empty stomach. You can choose either the Kaiseki course in your room or char-grilled cuisine in a dining area. I would highly recommend the latter. All ingredients were high-end including beef, lobsters, abalones, and vegetables, etc. Also, they have nice Japanese sake and wine lists to complement the meal. Then some rice balls were served for a night snack. Dinner starts from 18:00-19:00. You need to check-in by 18:00 if you have dinner on the property. If not, check-in by 21:00. Breakfast starts from 7:30-8:30. *Please note that inform the staff when you book a room with meals if you have any food allergies. They probably wouldn’t be able to prepare alternative food if you request on that day. Then, as far as I know, there wouldn’t be nice restaurants near the property. You may want to book a room with meals.
TOP5 Gourmet Ryokans in Kurokawa Onsen
All staff is so friendly, warm, and attentive. Absolutely you can experience signature Japanese hospitality during your stay. If you cannot find English speakers at the reception, you might want to write on paper what you want to say. Most of the staff would understand English sentences. I hope you don’t mind. Overall, the onsen ryokan has great value for money. Definitely, we would return again when we visit Mt. Aso. Have a nice trip!
