This is my cup of tea. Aso no Shiki wouldn’t be luxury, but truly cozy. If you are looking for a lovely small ryokan near Mt. Aso in Kumamoto prefecture, I really think you should stay here. The location is not in Kurokawa Onsen, though. The staff welcomed us with warmth. You wouldn’t feel like you’re checking in a ryokan, it’s like you’re being welcome back home. A lovely small garden, beautiful flower arrangements here and there, interior and architecture, etc., create a relaxed atmosphere. Aso no Shiki would be great for family, solo travelers, couples, or small groups. There are 9 rooms only. The property with a relaxed environment that women can feel comfortable staying even alone. Most of the rooms tend to be cramped but the housekeeping was excellent. The room was functional and Japan minimalistic. All of the amenities are taken care of including minimum toiletries, yukatas, and a green tea set, etc. The free WiFi reception was sometimes slow. Room service is not available. There is a vending machine for drinks in-house. Complimentary coffee is available in the lobby. There is no convenience store nearby. You might want to buy your necessities before coming here. Then I noticed that the property has no latest soundproofing system. If you are a light sleeper, you may want to request a quiet room as much as possible when you book a room. My ear sometimes caught the children’s voice and footsteps from next-door. There would be some families with small children, especially weekends. This is child-friendly. Staff can provide meals, amenities, chairs, and yukatas if you request in advance. Then, Aso no Shiki is not universal design but there are few steps in-house. Wheelchairs are not available for borrowing. There is no lift. You might want to inform the staff in advance if you bring people with weak feet. Then the property is pet-friendly. If you want to bring your dogs, you need to inform the staff in advance. Then there are 4 complimentary private family hot springs in-house which guests can use whenever they are not occupied. All of them are open for 24 hours. You should try all of them. The water temperature tends to be a bit high. The spring quality was nice. There is no communal hot spring. Also, there is no room with a private hot spring. Then local food experience for dinner and breakfast was just divine. The portion tends to be big. Don’t forget to bring your empty stomach. You can choose either the Kaiseki course in your room or char-grilled cuisine in a dining area. I would highly recommend the latter. All ingredients were high-end including beef, lobsters, abalones, and vegetables, etc. Also, they have nice Japanese sake and wine lists to complement the meal. Then some rice balls were served for a night snack. Dinner starts from 18:00-19:00. You need to check-in by 18:00 if you have dinner on the property. If not, check-in by 21:00. Breakfast starts from 7:30-8:30. *Please note that inform the staff when you book a room with meals if you have any food allergies. They probably wouldn’t be able to prepare alternative food if you request on that day. Then, as far as I know, there wouldn’t be nice restaurants near the property. You may want to book a room with meals. Then all staff is so friendly, warm and attentive. Absolutely you can experience signature Japanese hospitality during your stay. If you cannot find English speakers at the front desk, you might want to write on paper what you want to say. Most of the staff would understand English sentences. I hope you don’t mind. Overall, Aso no Shiki has great value for money. Definitely we would come back again when we visit Mt. Aso. The location is near JR Miyaji Station, 15min walk. A free shuttle service is available from the station. You need to book it in advance. Have a nice trip! Welcome to receive any questions about the property from the below space. *Check-in and out times 4:00 PM/10:00 AM **All information is as of the date that I posted on my blog.
