Fumoto Ryokan

Fumoto Ryokan wouldn’t be luxury, but very cozy and the location is perfect in Kurokawa Onsen.  You can fully enjoy hanging out around the town in Yukata whenever you like.  Perhaps, if you are a hot spring freak, I would highly recommend it.  There are a variety of private family hot springs in-house which you can complimentary use whenever they are not occupied.  On the other hand, if you are looking for luxury authentic ryokans, this is not.  Fumoto Ryokan would be great for families with children, small groups, couples, or solo travelers, but not romantic couples.  The ambiance would be friendly, charming, and quaint.  If you are going to stay here, I would highly recommend booking a room with a private hot spring in the annex.  The room in the annex is functional, user-friendly, and relaxed.  Facilities tend to be the latest as it was renovated in 2013.  Each room in the annex has a small kitchen.  If you bring small children, it would be very convenient.  This is child-friendly.  Staff can provide items for children, such as yukatas, futons, teddy bears, chairs, meals, and afternoon snacks, etc.  Also if this is your first time staying at ryokans, I would recommend staying at a room in annex as there are twin beds on tatami mats.  On the other hand, I wouldn’t recommend rooms in the main building as the wooden building tends to be aged and facilities tend to be worn-out.  Most of the rooms tend to be cramped.  The housekeeping was good, though.  Then all of the amenities are taken care of including minimum toiletries, yukatas, and a Japanese tea set, etc.  There are some colorful yukatas for women you can choose.  Then Kurokawa Onsen has some regulations about shampoo, soap, and detergent, etc., to protect the environment.  Those qualities tend to be inferior.  You may want to bring yours if you are particular.  There is a convenience store nearby.  Room service is not available.  There is a vending machine on-site.  Free WiFi reception was available around the lobby only.  Then Fumoto Ryokan is not a universal design.  There are many steep steps on-site.  There is no lift.  If you bring people with the weak feat, I would rather recommend staying at the sister inn, Ryokan Konoyu.  Then there are 9 complimentary private family hot springs that you can use whenever they are not occupied.  That’s amazing.  You may want to check-in earlier and try all of them as much as possible.  They are open from 6:00-9:30, 15:00-23:00.  Also, there are large communal hot springs in-house.  *Please note that if you have tattoos and want to use the communal hot springs, use the private family baths instead, or book a room with a private one in the annex.  Then local cuisine for dinner and breakfast was wonderful, especially, Higo beef and horse meat.  The portion tends to be big.  Don’t forget to bring your empty stomach.  *Please note that inform the staff when you book a room with meals if you have any food allergies.  They probably wouldn’t be able to prepare alternative food if you request on that day.  Then if you stay at a room in the main building, dinner is served in your room.  Breakfast is served in a private room in the main building.  If you stay at a room in the annex, all meals are served in a private room in the main building.  The annex is a little away from the main building.  You need to walk 3min on-site.  Dinner starts from 18:00 or 18:30.  *You need to check in by 18:00 if you have dinner on the property.  Then there are few restaurants for dinner around here.  Local papa-mama shops are closing early.  You may want to book a room including meals.  Then staff may not be sophisticated, but very helpful, gracious, and welcoming.  Overall, Fumoto Ryokan has great value for money.  Free shuttle service is available from Kurokawa Onsen Bus Stop.  You need to book it in advance.  At last, there are narrow mountain roads around here.  Also, the parking lot is cramped.  If you drive a car, you may want to inform the staff in advance as you may need their help.  Have a nice trip!  Welcome to receive any questions about the property from the below space.  *All information is as of the date that I posted on my blog.  **Check-in and out times 15:00/10:00  Rooms in annex until 11:00  You may want to inform staff of your expected arrival time in advance.  ***The payment is CASH only.  Check Availability and Pricing for the ryokan on Agoda or Booking.com
