Fumoto Ryokan

Fumoto Ryokan

What kind of onsen ryokan is Fumoto Ryokan?

Fumoto Ryokan
The onsen ryokan wouldn’t be luxury, but very cozy.  There are 14 rooms only.  Also, the location is perfect in Kurokawa Onsen.  You can fully enjoy hanging out around the town in Yukata whenever you like.  Perhaps, if you are a hot spring freak, I would recommend it.  There are a variety of private family hot springs in-house which you can use for free whenever they are not occupied.  On the other hand, if you are looking for luxury authentic ryokans, this is not.  Fumoto Ryokan would be great for families with children, small groups, couples, or solo travelers, but not romantic couples.  The ambiance would be friendly, charming, and quaint.

Is the location easy to access?

Free shuttle service is available from Kurokawa Onsen Bus Stop.  You need to book it in advance.  It takes just 5min on foot, though.  At last, there are narrow mountain roads around here.  Also, the parking lot is cramped.  If you drive a car, you may want to inform the staff in advance as you may need their help.

Rooms I would recommend?

If you are going to stay here, I would recommend rooms with private hot springs in the annex.  The rooms in the annex are functional, user-friendly, and relaxed.  Facilities tend to be the latest as they were renovated in 2013.  Each room in the annex has a small kitchen.  If you bring small children, it would be very convenient.  This is child-friendly.  Staff provides items for children, such as yukatas, futons, teddy bears, chairs, meals, and afternoon snacks, etc.  Also if this is your first time staying at onsen ryokans, I would recommend staying at rooms in the annex as there are twin beds on tatami mats.  On the other hand, I wouldn’t recommend rooms in the main building as the wooden building tends to be aged and facilities tend to be worn-out.  Also, most of the rooms tend to be cramped.

How about toiletries & in-room amenities?

All of the amenities are taken care of including minimum toiletries, yukatas, and a Japanese tea set, etc.  There are some colorful yukatas for women you can choose from.  Then Kurokawa Onsen has some regulations about shampoo, soap, and detergent, etc., to protect the environment.  Those qualities tend to be inferior.  You may want to bring yours if you are particular.  There is a convenience store nearby.  There is a vending machine on-site.  Room service is not available.  The housekeeping was good.  Free WiFi reception was available around the lobby only.

How about In-house Facilities?

There are 9 private family hot springs that you can use for free whenever they are not occupied.  That’s amazing.  You may want to check-in earlier and try all of them as much as possible.  They are open from 6:00-9:30, 15:00-23:00.  Also, there are large communal hot springs.  *Please note that if you have tattoos and want to use the communal hot springs, use the private family baths instead, or book a room with a private one in the annex.  Then Fumoto Ryokan is not a universal design.  There are many steep steps.  There is no lift.  If you bring people with weak feet, I wouldn’t recommend it.

How about meals?

The local cuisine for dinner and breakfast was wonderful, especially, Higo beef and horse meat.  The portion tends to be big.  Don’t forget to bring your empty stomach.  *Please note that inform the staff when you book a room with meals if you have any food allergies.  They probably wouldn’t be able to prepare alternative food if you request on that day.  Then if you stay in the rooms in the main building, dinner is served in your room.  Breakfast is served in a private room in the main building.  If you stay in the rooms in the annex, all meals are served in a private room in the main building.  The annex is a little away from the main building.  You need to walk 3min.  Dinner starts from 18:00 or 18:30.  *You need to check in by 18:00 if you have dinner on the property.  Then, as far as I know, there is no restaurant for dinner around here.  Local papa-mama shops are closing early.  You may want to book a room including meals.

My impressions

Staff may not be sophisticated, but very helpful, gracious, and welcoming.  Overall, Fumoto Ryokan has great value for money.  If relaxation is your main purpose, the property would be one of the best in Kurokawa Onsen.  Have a nice trip!  Welcome to receive any questions about Fumoto Ryokan from the below space.  You may want to inform the staff of your expected arrival time in advance.  The payment is CASH only.  Check Availability and Pricing for the ryokan on Agoda or Booking.com
