What kind of onsen ryokan is Kurokawa Onsen Oku no Yu?
If you are looking for rooms with private hot springs in Kurokawa Onsen, I would recommend it. This is a boutique onsen ryokan. There are 26 rooms only. Perhaps if you bring small children, you should stay here. This is child-friendly. Staff provides amenities, tableware, and yukatas, etc., for small children if you request in advance. Also, there is a small indoor swimming pool using hot spring water. It’s open all year round. They must be so happy. On the other hand, if you want to go on a hot spring hopping in Yukata around Kurokawa onsen whenever you like, this is no. The location is not in the central area. It takes 15min on foot. The onsen ryokan would be great for couples, families, small groups, or solo travelers.

Is the location easy to access?

Rooms I would recommend?
If you are going to stay here, I would recommend rooms with private hot springs in the annex. It’s well worth it. The room is cozy, charming, and quaint. You can chill out in the room while hearing white noise from the river. If this is your first stay at ryokans, I would recommend rooms in the new building because they were renovated in 2016. Facilities tend to be the latest. On the other hand, I wouldn’t recommend rooms in the main building because the facilities tend to be worn-out. Then if you are a light sleeper, you may want to stay in a room in the annex. The wooden building has no latest soundproofing. Your ear may catch some noise from upstairs, hallways, or next door.
How about toiletries & in-room amenities?
All of the amenities are taken care of including minimum toiletries, tea bags, and yukatas. Complimentary coffee is available at the library lounge from 15:00-23:00. There is a vending machine in-house. The free WiFi reception was excellent in the property when we stayed in 2019. There is no convenience store nearby. You may want to buy your necessities before coming here.
How about In-house Facilities?
There are some wonderful indoor and outdoor communal hot springs with mist saunas. They are open for 24H. Also, you have free access to 3 private family hot springs. You need to book them at the reception in advance. The water temperature tends to be lukewarm. On top of that, there is a small indoor swimming pool using hot spring water in the new building on 1F. It’s open from 15:00-21:00. You need to bring your own swimwear, etc. if you want to use it. Also, you can use a stone sauna at an additional charge, JPY1080. Then even if you arrive at the property earlier before 3:00 PM, you can use the communal baths. *If you have tattoos, you may not be permitted to use the public bathing area. Then Kurokawa Onsen Oku no Yu is not a universal design and there is no lift. Wheelchairs are available for borrowing, though. If you bring people with weak feet, you may want to stay in a room in the annex as there are few steps. Once you enter the room, you wouldn’t need to move around as there is a private hot spring.

How about meals?
The local food experience was good, but it wouldn’t be special. The portion tends to be average. There are 4 dining areas in-house. It depends on which room you book. It seems that there is no private room for meals, but the table in the dining room was separated by dividers that provide a decent level of privacy. Dinner starts from 18:00, 18:30 or 19:00. Breakfast starts from 8:00, 8:30, or 9:00. They can provide meals for small children if you order in advance. *Please note that inform the staff when you book a room with meals if you have any food allergies. They probably wouldn’t be able to prepare alternative food if you request on that day. Then, as far as I know, there is no restaurant around the property. Most of the local papa-mama shops are closing early. You may want to book a room including meals.
The staff tends to be not sophisticated. They are friendly, though. Overall, the price range would be reasonable. The hardware is great if you stay in the new building or in the annex. At last, the property is surrounded by a beautiful large garden. You must be excited to take a walk around here. You can get much of an immersive “traditional mountain ryokan” experience as you expect. Have a nice trip! Welcome to receive any questions about Kurokawa Onsen Oku no Yu from the below space.
