Kurokawa So

Kurokawa So

What kind of onsen ryokan is Kurokawa So?

Kurokawa So
If you want to enjoy outdoor communal hot springs while seeing dynamic views, you should stay here.  It’s truly worth it.  The property has amazing outdoor hot springs.  There are many outdoor hot springs in Kurokawa Onsen, but no doubt they would be the best.  Perhaps, if you are looking for rooms with wonderful private hot springs, I would recommend staying here.  On the other hand, if you want to hang out around the onsen town in Yukata whenever you like, this is not.  The property is a little away from the center of Kurokawa Onsen.  It takes around 15min on foot.  Kurokawa-so would be great for couples, families, or small groups.  The ambiance is cozy, tranquil, and serene.

Is the location easy to access?

Free shuttle service is available from Kurokawa Onsen Bus Stop.  You need to book it in advance.

Rooms I would recommend?

If you are going to stay here, I would recommend rooms of the traditional Japanese-style house in the annex with private indoor and outdoor hot springs.  You can fully enjoy amazing private hot springs whenever you like.  The spring quality is thick, creamy, and moist.  The rooms with Japanese traditional fireplaces are very charming, quaint, and cozy.  Then if you stay in the annex, you can use an awesome outdoor private family hot spring with a peaceful view too.  It’s complimentary.  Don’t forget to try it.

How about toiletries & in-room amenities?

All of the amenities are taken care of including minimum toiletries, yukatas, and a green tea set, etc.  Room service is not available.  There is a vending machine in-house.  There is no convenience store nearby.  You might want to buy your necessities before coming here.  The housekeeping was excellent.  The free WiFi reception was very good.

How about In-house Facilities?

Kurokawa-So has some amazing outdoor communal hot springs.  The riverside and dynamic rock cliffs are illuminated at night.  You can view a mystical landscape while soaking in the outdoor communal hot springs under the sky full of glittering stars.  That’s precious time.  The communal ones are open from 6:00-10:30, 15:00-24:00.  Also, there are three indoor private family ones that you can use for free.  You need to book them in advance if you want to use.  All of them are open from 7:30 to 21:00.  *Please note that if you have tattoos and want to use the communal hot springs, use reserved private family baths instead, or book a room with private onsens in the annex.   Then there is a cozy café & bar called “Yamaboshi”.  It’s open from 8:00-17:00 and 20:30-23:00.  Then Kurokawa-So is not a universal design.  There are many steps and there is no lift.  I wouldn’t recommend it if you bring people with weak feet.

How about meals?

The food experience for dinner and breakfast was just divine.  The portion tends to be big.  Don’t forget to bring your empty stomach.  If you stay in the rooms of the traditional Japanese-style houses in the annex, char-grilled cuisine is offered in your room.  All ingredients were high-end including beef, fish, and vegetables, etc.  Also, Japanese cuisine for breakfast is served at a lounge in the annex.  If you are a gourmet, you should stay in the rooms in the annex.  Then if you stay in other rooms, Japanese kaiseki food is served in your room or a dining area.  *Please note that inform the staff when you book a room with meals if you have any food allergies or dietary needs.  They probably wouldn’t be able to prepare alternative food if you request on that day.  Then, as far as I know, there is no restaurant for dinner around the property.  Local papa-mama shops are closing early.  You may want to book a room including meals.

My impressions

Overall, the onsen ryokan has great value for money.  When we visited here on New Year’s day, all staff looked so busy.  If you want to relax in a tranquil atmosphere, you might want to avoid staying during Lunar New Year, late April to early May, weekends in Oct and Nov, and the end of the year and new year holiday.  Kurokawa-so is one of very popular.   We truly love the room of the traditional Japanese-style house in the annex.  It was our best memory.  Have a nice trip!  Welcome to receive any questions about the property from the below space.  You need to inform the staff of your expected arrival time in advance.   Check Availability and Pricing for the ryokan on Booking.com or Agoda
