Ryokan Sanga

If you are looking for an authentic small onsen ryokan adventure, I would highly recommend Ryokan Sanga.  The ambiance is very tranquil, charming, and quaint.  On the other hand, if this is your first time staying at ryokans, this is not.  Facilities tend to be outdated.  I would rather recommend Ryokan Miyama Sansou or Kurokawa Onsen Gosyo Gekkoujyu.  Perhaps, if you want to fully enjoy going on a hot spring hopping in Yukata in Kurokawa Onsen whenever you like, I wouldn’t recommend it.  Ryokan Sanga is located a bit away from the center of the town.  It takes 5min by car.  The property would be great for couples, families, small groups, or solo travelers.  If you are going to stay here, I would highly recommend booking a room called “Nemu-no-Ki”.  The room has twin beds on tatami mats, a cozy terrace, and private indoor and outdoor hot springs with peaceful views.  It’s really worth staying in the room.  We spent lots of time jumping in and out of our private baths while enjoying white noise and starry sky in good weather, such an extraordinary experience.  Also if you are a light sleeper you may want to book a room in the annex.  The rooms in the annex would be very quiet.  Basically the wooden traditional building has no latest soundproofing.  Your ear may catch some noise if you stay at the main building.  Ryokan Sanga was built a long time ago so it may be impossible to install the latest one.  Then all of the amenities are taken care of including minimum toiletries, a green tea set, and yukatas, etc.  *Please note that a hairdryer provided in each room tends to be not powerful.  If you need a better one, you can request it at the front desk.  Electric energy is very limited in Kurokawa Onsen so it would be impossible to use powerful ones for all guests.  Also, there are some regulations about shampoo, soap, and detergent, etc., to protect the environment.  These qualities provided in bathrooms tend to be inferior.  You might want to bring yours if you are particular.  Then there is no convenience store nearby.  You might want to buy your necessities before coming here.  Room service is not available.  Then if you feel awful when you sleep on Japanese-style mattresses in tatami rooms, you might want to request two mattress layers in advance.  Alternatively, you can book a room with western beds on tatami mats which is called Nemu-no-Ki.   Then the ryokan has some amazing communal indoor and outdoor hot springs.  The spring quality is thick, soft, and smooth, like skin lotion.  Also, you have free access to three private family hot springs in-house.  You need to book them when you check-in if you want to use.  The communal ones are open from 6:00 to 22:30.  The indoor private family stone baths are open from 6:00-10:00, 15:00-24:00.  The outdoor private family one is open from 7:30-10:00, 15:00-22:00.  *Please note that if you have tattoos and want to use the communal hot springs, use reserved private family baths, or book a room with a private oneThen Ryokan Sanga is not a universal design.  If you bring people with weak feet, you might want to request a room on 1F or book a room with a private hot spring.  There are few steps in a room.  There is no lift.  Then free WiFi reception was available at the lobby, library, and dining area only.  Also, the signal was really weak.  Only NTT Docomo should be OK.  Then local cuisine for dinner and breakfast was great.  It may be a little challenging for the western palate.  The portion tends to be average.  All meals are served in a private room in a dining area.  If you bring small children, all meals would be served in your room.  Also if you book a room in the annex, all meals are served in your room.  Dinner starts from 18:00, 18:30 or 19:00.  Breakfast starts from 8:00 to 9:00.  *Please note that inform the staff when you book a room with meals if you have any food allergies or dietary needs.  They probably wouldn’t be able to prepare alternative food if you request on that day.  Then there are few restaurants for dinner around the property.  The location is out of the way.  You may want to book a room including meals.  Overall, rooms in the main building tend to be at an affordable price, but if you want to stay in a serene atmosphere, I would highly recommend a room in the annex.  At last, if you want to chill out at the property in a tranquil atmosphere, you might want to avoid staying during Lunar New Year, late April to early May, weekend in Oct & Nov, and the end of the year and New Year holiday.  Have a nice trip!  Welcome to receive any questions about the property from the below space.  *All information is as of the date that I posted on my blog.  **Check-in and out times 3:00 PM/10:00 AM Only the room called “Nemu-no-Ki” until 11:00 AM.  ***You need to inform the staff of your time and means of arrival in advance.   ****Free shuttle service is available from Kurokawa Onsen Bus Stop.  You need to book it in advance.  Check Availability and Pricing for the ryokan on Booking.com or Agoda
