Ryokan Wakaba

If you are looking for small cozy ryokans, I would highly recommend Ryokan Wakaba.  The property is not luxury but you can experience a lot of signature Japanese hospitality with a personal touch during your stay.  Perhaps if you want to bring children, I think you should stay here.  This is child-friendly.  Staff can provide some items for small children.  I noticed that there were many families with children staying at the property.  On the other hand, if you are looking for luxury authentic ryokans, this is not.   Ryokan Wakaba would be great for family, couples, or small groups.  The ambiance is cozy-looking, friendly, and livery.  If you are going to staying here, I would highly recommend booking a room with a private indoor hot spring in the annex.  The room is truly tranquil, relaxed, and spacious.  Also if you feel awful when you sleep on Japanese-style mattresses in tatami rooms, you may want to book a room with twin beds on tatami mats in the annex.   We spent a lot of time jumping in and out of our private one while enjoying white noise from the river.  Also, there are some communal hot springs.  On top of that, there are two private family ones for free which you can use.  You need to book them at the front desk in advance if you want to use them.  The spring quality is thick, soft, and moist.  The water temperature tends to be a bit high.  The communal ones are open from 6:30 to 23:00.  The private family ones are open from 13:00-10:00 the following morning.  *If you have tattoos and want to use the communal hot springs, use reserved private family ones instead, or book a room with a private hot spring.  Then all of the amenities are taken care of including minimum toiletries, yukatas, a coffee machine, and a green tea set, etc.  Also, the quality of shampoo, conditioner, soap, etc., tends to be inferior because Kurokawa Onsen encourages to use Eco-friendly detergent.  If you are particular, you may want to bring yours.  Then there is a vending machine for drinks in-house.  Complimentary snacks, such as red bean soup with rice cake, shaved ice, and non-alcoholic rice drink, etc., were served at the lobby in the afternoon.  That’s a great service.  Free WiFi reception was available in the lobby only.  Then Ryokan Wakaba is not a universal design.  There are some steps in-house.  I wouldn’t recommend this property if you bring people with weak feet.  Then food experience for dinner and breakfast was just divine.  If you book a room in the annex, Japanese-style BBQ food is served in a dining area.  *Kaiseki cuisine is served between July and Aug only.  We sat around the fireplace and we fully enjoyed various cooking there while keeping warm.  The ingredients were high-end including beef, horse meat, and fish, etc.  If you book other rooms, Kaiseki cuisine is served in your room all year round.  I would highly recommend Japanese-style BBQ.  The portion tends to be big.  Don’t forget to bring your empty stomach.  Dinner starts from 18:00 or 18:30.  If you have dinner on the property, you need to check-in by 20:30.  Breakfast starts from 8:00 or 8:30.  *If you have any food allergies or dietary needs, you need to inform staff when you book a room with meals.  They probably wouldn’t be able to prepare alternative food if you request on that day.  Then, as far as I know, there are few restaurants for dinner around here.  Local papa-mama shops are closing early.  You may want to book a room including meals.   Then the location is near the center of Kurokawa Onsen.  There is a long slope on the way to the town, though.  A free shuttle service is available from the bus stop.  You need to book it in advance.  If you want to go on a hot spring hopping in Yukata whenever you like, the property would be great.  Overall, Ryokan Wakaba has good value for money.  It’s worth staying at it.  Have a nice trip!  Welcome to receive any questions about the property from the below space.  *Check-in and out times 3:00 PM/11:00 AM **All information is as of the date that I posted on my blog.  ***If you check-in after 17:30, you need to inform the staff in advance.  Check Availability and Pricing for the ryokan on Agoda or Booking.com
