Ryokan Wakaba

Ryokan Wakaba

What kind of onsen ryokan is Ryokan Wakaba?

If you are looking for small cozy ryokans, I would recommend it.  The property is not luxury but you can experience a lot of signature Japanese hospitality with a personal touch during your stay.  Perhaps if you want to bring children, you should stay here.  This is child-friendly.  The staff provides some items for small children.  I noticed that there were many families with children on the property.  On the other hand, if you are looking for luxury authentic ryokans, this is not.   The onsen ryokan would be great for family, couples, or small groups.  The ambiance is cozy-looking, family-oriented, and livery.

Is the location easy to access?

The location is near Kurokawa Onsen Bus Stop.  It takes 5min on foot, but there is a long slope on the way to the property.  A free shuttle service is available from the bus stop.  You need to book it in advance.  If you want to go on a hot spring hopping in Yukata whenever you like, the location would be great.

Rooms I would recommend?

Ryokan Wakaba
If you are going to staying here, I would recommend rooms with private indoor hot springs in the annex.  The rooms are truly tranquil, relaxed, and spacious.  Also, if you don’t want to sleep on Japanese mattresses in tatami rooms, you should stay at the rooms in the annex.  They have twin beds on tatami mats.   We fully enjoyed our private one while hearing white noise from the river.

How about toiletries & in-room amenities?

All of the amenities are taken care of including minimum toiletries, yukatas, a coffee machine, and a green tea set, etc.  Also, the quality of shampoo, conditioner, soap, etc., tends to be inferior because Kurokawa Onsen encourages to use Eco-friendly detergent.  If you are particular, you may want to bring yours.  Then there is a vending machine for drinks.  Complimentary snacks, such as red bean soup with rice cake, shaved ice, and non-alcoholic rice drink, etc., were served at the lobby in the afternoon.  That’s a great service.  Free WiFi reception was available in the lobby only.

How about In-house Facilities?

There are some wonderful communal hot springs.  On top of that, there are two private family ones which you can use for free.  You need to book at the reception if you want to use them.  The spring quality is thick, soft, and moist.  The water temperature tends to be a bit high.  The communal ones are open from 6:30 to 23:00.  The private family ones are open from 13:00-10:00 the following morning.  *If you have tattoos and want to use the communal hot springs, use reserved private family ones instead, or book a room with a private hot spring in the annex.  Then Ryokan Wakaba is not a universal design.  There are some steps.  I wouldn’t recommend it if you bring people with weak feet.

How about meals?

The food experience for dinner and breakfast was just divine.  If you stay in the rooms in the annex, Japanese-style BBQ cuisine is served in a dining area.  *Kaiseki cuisine is served between July and Aug only.  We sat around the fireplace and we fully enjoyed various cooking there while keeping warm.  The ingredients were high-end including beef, horse meat, and fish, etc.  If you stay in other rooms, Kaiseki cuisine is served in a dining area.  The portion tends to be big.  Don’t forget to bring your empty stomach.  Dinner starts from 18:00 or 18:30.  If you have dinner on the property, you need to check-in by 20:30.  Breakfast starts from 8:00 or 8:30.  *If you have any food allergies or dietary needs, you need to inform staff when you book a room with meals.  They probably wouldn’t be able to prepare alternative food if you request on that day.  Then, as far as I know, there is no restaurant for dinner around here.  Local papa-mama shops are closing early.  You may want to book a room including meals.

My impressions

Overall, the onsen ryokan has good value for money.  It’s well worth staying here.  Have a nice trip!  Welcome to receive any questions about Ryokan Wakaba from the below space.   If you check-in after 17:30, you need to inform the staff in advance.  Check Availability and Pricing for the onsen ryokan on Agoda or Booking.com
