Yama no Yado Shinmeikan

Yama no Yado Shinmeikan wouldn’t be luxury, but the software is absolutely wonderful.  If you want to experience signature Japanese hospitality with a personal touch, I would highly recommend it.  Perhaps if you want to experience a traditional mountain hut adventure in Kurokawa Onsen, I really think you should stay here.  On the other hand, if this is your first time staying at ryokans, you should find others, because facilities tend to be old fashioned.  Yama no Yado Shinmeikan would be great for couples, solo travelers, small groups, or family.  The ambiance is cozy, friendly, and relaxed.  There are 13 rooms only.  We felt that we were being pulled into old-Japan.  If you are going to stay here, I would highly recommend booking a room with a river view.  All rooms tend to be cramped but clean, well-maintained, and quaint.  Then all of the amenities are taken care of including minimum toiletries, a green tea set, and yukatas.  Kurokawa Onsen has some regulations about shampoo, soap, and detergent, etc., to protect the environment.  Those qualities tend to be inferior.  You might want to bring yours if you are particular.  Then there is a vending machine for drinks in-house.   Complimentary coffee is available in the lobby.  Then Yama no Yado Shinmeikan is not universal design.  There are many steps in-house.  If you bring people with weak feet, this is not.  You may want to find others.  Then if you feel awful when you sleep on Japanese-style mattresses in tatami rooms, you might want to request two mattress layers in advance.  There is no room with western beds on tatami mats.  The hairdryer provided in our room was not powerful.  Free WiFi reception was available in the lobby only, but it was weak.  Then there are amazing communal hot springs in-house.  They are surprisingly unique.  You should try all of them during your stay.  The water temperature was just nice.  The spring quality was absolutely perfect.  The stone and cave hot springs are open from 6:30 to 22:30.  Then there are two private family ones for free which you can use.  You need to book them at the front desk if you want to use them.  The private family ones are open from 15:00-9:30 the following morning.  On top of that, you can use communal hot springs in the sister inns, “Yamamizuki” and “Ryokan Miyama Sansou”.  Don’t forget to visit two of them.  Staff can bring you to the venues.  *Please note that if you have tattoos and want to use the communal hot springs, use reserved private family baths instead.  Then the countryside Irori cuisine using lots of local ingredients for dinner and breakfast was simply wonderful.  The portion tends to be average.  All meals are served in a dining area.    *Please note that inform the staff when you book a room with meals if you have any food allergies.  They probably wouldn’t be able to prepare alternative food if you request on that day.   Then, as far as I know, there are few restaurants for dinner around the property.  Local papa-mama shops are closing early.  You may want to book a room including meals.  Overall, Yama no Yado Shinmeikan has good value for money.  The experience was very unique.  We would come back again.  Anyway, the ryokan is one of the very popular and an icon of Kurokawa Onsen.  If you want to chill out here in a tranquil atmosphere, you may want to avoid staying during Lunar New Year, late April to early May, weekends in Oct and Nov, and the end of the year and new year holiday.   At last, if you drive a car, be careful.  There are many narrow and one-way streets around the property.  Also, you may be stuck in a traffic jam during the busy season.  It would be very hard to drive, especially snowy days unless you are a local.  I would recommend visiting Kurokawa Onsen by public transportation.  The property is located in the center of the town.  Absolutely you can fully enjoy going on a hot spring hopping in Yukata whenever you like.  Free shuttle service is available from Kurokawa Onsen Bus Stop.  You need to book it in advance.  Have a nice trip!  Welcome to receive any questions about the property from the below space.  *All information is as of the date that I posted on my blog.  **Check-in and out times 3:00 PM/11:00 AM ***You need to inform staff of your arrival time and means in advance.  Check Availability and Pricing for the ryokan on Booking.com or Agoda
