What kind of onsen ryokan is Yakakutei?

This is an authentic luxury ryokan.  The property is one of the best in Kagoshima.  Once we entered the gate, we were overwhelmed by the beauty of the traditional garden.  It’s like you’re in another world.  If you are a connoisseur of Japan, I would recommend it.  On the other hand, if you are looking for modern ryokans, this is not.  The ambiance is serene, charming, and quaint.  The property would be great for couples, families, solo travelers, or small groups.  Once we arrived at the lobby, the staff welcomed us with warmth and escorted to the lounge, then served green tea espresso.  We relaxed here while viewing an amazing traditional garden and having green tea.  That’s precious time.

Is the location easy to access?

Yes, it would be very easy.  A free shuttle service is available from Kagoshima Airport.  You need to book it in advance.  It takes 15min by car.

Rooms I would recommend?

If you are going to stay here, I would recommend rooms with outdoor private hot springs in an annex.  The room with a traditional small garden is spacious, charming, and quaint.  On the other hand, standard rooms in the main building wouldn’t be special.  I wouldn’t recommend the standard rooms.  Then there is no room with western beds.  If you don’t want to sleep on a Japanese-style mattress called futon in a tatami room,  I wouldn’t recommend this ryokan.  Check Availability and Pricing for the ryokan on Booking.com or Agoda

How about toiletries & in-room amenities?

All of the amenities are taken care of including minimum toiletries, samue outfits, yukatas, a Japanese tea set, and a humidifier, etc.  The free WiFi reception was good in the building.  Room service is not available.   Also, this is child-friendly.  Staff provides meals, tableware, and yukatas for small children if you request in advance.

How about In-house Facilities?

There are amazing large communal outdoor and indoor hot springs.  You may become a hot spring freak if you try them.  The spring quality is like skin lotion, very thick, creamy, and soft.  The water temperature tends to be a bit high.  All of them are open from 6:00-9:00, 11:00-24:00.  *Please note that if you have tattoos and want to use the communal hot springs, book a room with a private one instead.   Then Yakakutei is not a universal design but there are few steps in the building.  Wheelchairs are available for borrowing.  If you bring people with weak feet, you may want to inform the staff in advance as they can arrange a room near the reception or the lift.  Then there is a vending machine in-house.  There is a convenience store nearby.

How about meals?

Kaiseki food experience for dinner and breakfast was just divine.  If you are a gourmet, you should try it.  The portion tends to be big.  Don’t forget to bring your empty stomach.  If you stay at a room in the annex, dinner is served in your room.  Breakfast is served in a dining area.  If you stay at a standard room in the main building, all meals are served in a dining area.  Dinner starts from 17:30-19:00.  Breakfast starts from 7:00-8:30.  *Please note that inform the staff when you book a room with meals if you have any food allergies.  They probably wouldn’t be able to prepare alternative food if you request on that day.  Then, as far as I know, there wouldn’t be restaurants around here.  The property is located in a residential area.  You may want to book a room including meals.

My impressions

All staff tends to be not sophisticated.  If you expect 5-star hotel service, this is not.  Please be mindful and respectful of the Japanese traditions here as it’s a very traditional accommodation.  Overall, Yakakutei has good value for money if compared to authentic ryokans in Hakone, Atami, and Izu, etc.  If you want to get much of an immersive authentic ryokan experience as you expect, Yakakutei would be perfect.  Have a nice trip!  Welcome to receive any questions about Yakakutei from the below space.   If you check-in after 18:30, you need to inform the staff in advance.  Check Availability and Pricing for the ryokan on Booking.com or Agoda
