Shioyu Naginoto Ryokan

What kind of accommodation is Shioyu Naginoto Ryokan?

If you are in Fukuoka, I would recommend visiting Karatsu.  It takes around 70min by train from Hakata Station.  Shioyu Naginoto Ryokan wouldn’t be a luxury, but cozy and good value for money.  If you are looking for boutique modern ryokans in Karatsu, Saga prefecture, you should stay here.  There are 23 rooms only.  The property would be great for family, couples, or small groups, but not solo travelers.  The ambiance is family-oriented, tranquil, and friendly.

Is the location easy to access?

Yes, it would be easy from Hamasaki Station.  Free shuttle service is available from 9:00-12:00, 13:00-18:00.  You need to book it in advance.  Alternatively, it takes 10min on foot from the station.

Rooms I would recommend?

Personally, I like rooms with views of the Japanese garden and terraces.  The rooms tend to be charming and quaint.  We chilled out at the terrace while viewing the well-kept garden.  If you like views of the ocean, I would recommend rooms with ocean views on 2F.  You can relax while listening to the sound of waves.  Unluckily, there is no room with an outdoor private hot spring.  Also, the property has Japanese-style rooms only.  If you don’t want to sleep on Japanese-style mattresses called futon in tatami rooms, you may want to find others.  Check Availability and Pricing for the hotel on Agoda or Booking.com

How about toiletries & in-room amenities?

All of the amenities are taken care of including enough toiletries, samue outfits, yukatas, pajamas, tea bags, and a Japanese tea set.  There are some colorful yukatas for women which you can choose.  Also, complimentary wine, whiskey, shochu, cocktail, soft drinks, and finger food, etc., are available at the bar lounge from 18:00-23:00.  That’s a great service.  Room service is not available.  Then, this is child-friendly.  Staff provides yukatas, amenities, and meals for small children if you request in advance.  Also, Free WiFi reception was patchy in our room when we stayed in March 2019, but I could connect to the internet around the public areas.

How about In-house Facilities?

Facilities tend to be outdated, but well-maintained.  There is a convenience store within 10min walking distance.  Then Shioyu Naginoto Ryokan is not a universal design.  There are some steps.  There is no lift.  There is no room with western beds on tatami mats in the property.  A wheelchair is available for borrowing, though.  If you bring people with weak feet, you may want to find others.  Then there are large indoor and outdoor communal baths using seawater which are drawn from the ocean and heated.  We fully enjoyed the outdoor bath while viewing the beautiful ocean of Karatsu.  We were overwhelmed by a picturesque sunset.  Also, there is a complimentary private family bath with a sauna that you can use for 60min.  You need to book it in advance.  All of them are open from 6:00 to 24:00.  The water temperature tends to be lukewarm.  They are not hot springs, but salt baths.  *If you have tattoos and want to use the communal baths, use the private family one.

How about meals?

The kaiseki seafood experience was good, but the portion tends to be small.  If you are a big eater, you would need something to eat for a night snack.  Also, you can order baby food at an additional charge JPY800.  All meals are served in a restaurant.  Dinner starts from 18:00-20:00.  Breakfast starts from 7:00-9:00.  *Please note that inform the staff when you book a room with meals if you have any food allergies.  They probably wouldn’t be able to prepare alternative food if you request on that day.  Alternatively, you can go out for dinner.  There are some local restaurants within 10min walking distance.  If this is your first visit Karatsu, you may want to ask the staff about recommended restaurants around here.

My impressions

Their hospitality would be more like typical chain hotels.  If you expect signature Japanese hospitality, this is not.  The property would be understaffed during the busy season.  Overall, Shioyu Naginoto Ryokan would be a nice place for family.  If you want to get much of an immersive ocean view experience, it’s well worth staying here.  Then, the property is very popular.  If you want to relax in a tranquil atmosphere, you should stay on weekdays.  Also, you may want to avoid staying during Lunar New Year, late April to early May, weekend in Nov, and the end of the year and New Year holiday.  At last, don’t forget to check a weather forecast before booking a room.  That’s the most important if you want to see a beautiful ocean.  Have a nice trip!  Welcome to receive any questions about Shioyu Naginoto Ryokan from the below space.   Check Availability and Pricing for the hotel on Agoda or Booking.com
