Nanten En

If you are looking for an authentic ryokan adventure in Osaka, you should stay at Nanten En.  There are just 14 rooms.  Access to the property would be so easy from Osaka City.  It takes 60min by train.  The location is just a 1min walk from Amami Station.  If you are a connoisseur of Japan, I would highly recommend it.  Actually, there are few ryokans in Osaka City because most people stay in city hotels.  Nanten En is one of the important ryokans.  On the other hand, if this is your first time staying at ryokans, this is not.  Facilities tend to be aged.  You may feel uncountable during your stay at the ryokan.  Also, there is no room with western beds in Japanese-style tatami rooms.  If you don’t want to sleep on Japanese-style mattresses, this is not.  The property wouldn’t be luxurious, but the ambiance is charming, quaint, and tranquil.  If you are going to stay here, I would highly recommend booking a room with views of the traditional garden, or a room with a private outdoor hot spring in the annex.  The spring quality was good.  We spent a lot of time jumping in and out of our private one until check-out time.  You can relax in a room while viewing the traditional garden and hearing white noise from the river.  On the other hand, I wouldn’t recommend rooms without bathrooms.  You need to use a shared bathroom.  It would be inconvenient.   Then all of the amenities are taken care of including minimum toiletries, yukatas, a Japanese tea set, and bottled water, etc.  Room service is not available.  There is no convenience store nearby.  You may want to buy your necessities before coming here.  *Food and drink from outside are prohibited except baby food.  You can order drinks at the lounge lobby, such as coffee, English tea, Jasmine tea, and orange juice, etc.  The free Wi-Fi reception was patchy in the building.  Then the property is not a universal design and there is no lift.  If you bring people with weak feet, you may want to request a room on 1F in advance.  Also, this is child-friendly.  Staff provides yukatas, meals, and toiletries at an additional charge for children if you request in advance.  Then there are small indoor communal hot springs in-house.  There is no outdoor communal and no private family hot spring.  That’s too bad.  They are open from 11:00 to 9:30 the following morning.  *Please note that if you have tattoos and want to use the communal hot springs, book a room with a private hot spring in the annex.  Then there is a swimming pool in-house.  It’s open from 9:00 to 17:00, between mid-July and late-Aug.  Then I noticed that the traditional wooden building has no latest soundproofing.  My ear sometimes caught some noise from outside, upstairs, and a hallway.  If you are a light sleeper, you should request a quiet room in advance.  Then kaiseki food for dinner was wonderful.  The food tends to be authentic.  It may be challenging for western palates.  Dinner was served in our room.  After dinner, some rice balls were offered in our room.  Then Japanese cuisine for breakfast was good, but not special.  Breakfast was served in a dining area.  You can enjoy food while viewing a peaceful garden.  *Please note that inform the staff when you book a room with meals if you have any food allergies or dietary needs.  They probably wouldn’t be able to prepare alternative food if you request on that day.   Then, as far as I know, there wouldn’t be nice restaurants around the property.  The location is out of the way.  You may want to book a room including meals.  Then the staff tends to be very friendly, warm, and helpful, but be mindful and respectful of the Japanese traditions here as it’s a very traditional accommodation.  At last, don’t forget to take a walk in a beautiful garden.  The best season to stay here would be in spring or fall.  I hope that you would get much of an immersive “authentic Japanese” experience as you expect.  Have a nice trip!  Welcome to receive any questions about Nanten En from the below space.  *All information is as of the date that I posted on my blog.  **Check-in and out times 15:00/10:00  Check Availability and Pricing for the ryokan on or Agoda
