Hatago Kayausagi

If you are looking for a traditional ryokan adventure near Yufuin, you must stay here. Perhaps if you are a gourmet, I would highly recommend staying here.  The food was unexpectedly nice.  On the other hand, if you are looking for a modern ryokan, this is not.  Perhaps, if you are not so keen on hot springs, I wouldn’t recommend staying here.  The ambience would be serene, cozy, and tranquil.  Once we entered the gate, we felt that we were being pulled into old-Japan with the garden, architecture, decorations, furniture, interior, etc.  This is a spectacular place to stay with to every detail.  The ryokan would be great for couples, family, small groups, or solo travelers.  I noticed that there were some solo travelers staying here.  Anyway if you are going to stay here, I would highly recommend booking a room with private inner and outdoor hot springs in an independent guest-cottage.  The room tends to be specious, comfortable, and clean.  The private baths were simply wonderful.  The spring quality is very thick, smooth and moist.  Once you try it, you would become an onsen freak.  We spent a lot of time jumping in and out of our private ones.  Then all of the amenities are taken care of including minimum toiletries, yukatas, Japanese sweets, water bottle, and green tea set, etc.  Please note that there is no convenience store nearby.  You might want to buy your necessities before coming here.  Also if you feel awful when you sleep on Japanese-style mattresses in tatami rooms, you might want to request two mattress layers in advance to avoid having a backache.  Then there are some steep steps with no lift in-house.  This is not universal design.  If you bring small kids, elderly people, or people with weak feet, you might want to book a room on 1F or in an independent guest-cottage.  You might want to inform staff of it in advance.  Then there are wonderful public hot springs in-house.  They are open between 14:00-24:00, and 6:30-11:00.  Also all guests can use public outdoor and private family hot springs in the sister inn located walking distance.  You can complimentary use all of them including the family one for 60min. You need to book it at the front desk.  The famer is open between 12:00-22:00 on weekdays, and 11:00-22:00 on weekends and public holidays.  The latter is open between 10:00-25:00 on weekdays, and 9:00-25:00 on weekends and public holidays.  Then kaiseki food for dinner was just divine.  The portion tends to be big.  Don’t forget to bring an empty stomach.  All meals are served in a stunning private room which is decorated Japanese traditional style.  Breakfast starts from 8:30.  Then staff tends to be not sophisticated, but very warm, helpful and friendly. If you cannot find an English speaker at the front desk, you might want to write on paper what you want to say.  Most of staff would understand English sentences.  I hope you wouldn’t mind it.  Alternatively, if you have specific requests, you might want to inform staff of it in advance by e-mail  front@kayausagi.jp  Only my issue is that there is no nice view from the property.  That’s too bad.  Overall the ryokan has a nicely balanced the software and hardware.  On top of that, it has good value for money if compared to ryokans in center of Yufuin.  It’s well worth a visit.  Anyway the best season to stay here would be except the summer season.  There would be many bugs around the outdoor baths in the season as the location is out of the way.  If you are a metropolitan, you may feel uncomfortable during your stay here.  At last, shuttle service is available from Hita station or Hita Bus Center.  You need to book it in advance.  It takes 10min from the station by car.  Have a nice trip!  Welcome to receive any questions about the property from the below space.  *All information is as of the date that I posted on my blog.  **Check in and out times 3:00PM/11:00AM  Check Availability and Pricing for the ryokan on Booking.com or Agoda
