What kind of onsen ryokan is Nanaeyae Ryokan?
This is not a luxury, but very cozy, relaxed, and tranquil. If you are looking for small onsen ryokans in Kinugawa Onsen, I would recommend it. There are 35 rooms only. Also, there is a room with a private outdoor hot spring. You can soak in the private one while viewing peaceful mountains. Perhaps if you want to experience signature Japanese-specific hospitality with a personal touch, you should stay here. All staff welcomed us with warmth and we didn’t feel like we were checking in a ryokan, it was like we were being welcomed back home. The property would be great for family, couples, small groups, or solo travelers. The ambiance is cozy-looking, serene, and family-oriented.
Is the location easy to access?
Yes, it would be easy, just a walk 5min from Kinugawa Onsen Station. Alternatively, if you have a lot of luggage, you should take a Nikko-Koutsu Bus between 12:00 and 17:17. Turn right after you exit the station, and take the bus at the number 5 bus stop. When you get on a bus, you need to tell a bus driver where you are staying. Then get off at Nanaeyae. It takes around 5min. It costs 190JPY per adult and JPY100 for children. Also, there are always some taxies in front of the station.
Rooms I would recommend?
If you are going to stay here, I would recommend a room with a private outdoor hot spring on a balcony. That’s wonderful. You can soak in the bath while enjoying white noise from the river and starry sky, such an extraordinary experience. The room tends to be cramped, but truly relaxing. Facilities tend to be outdated, but well-maintained and clean. The housekeeping was excellent. Most of the rooms are Japanese-style, but there is only one room with twin beds.
How about toiletries & in-room amenities?
All of the amenities are taken care of including enough toiletries, yukatas, Japanese sweets, and a green tea set, etc. Room service is not available. There is a convenience store nearby. *Food and drink from outside is prohibited. There is a vending machine for drinks in-house. The free wifi reception is available in the lobby only.
How about In-house Facilities?
The large communal hot springs with awesome views are awesome. The view from the outdoor hot springs was amazingly beautiful in the spring and autumn season. The spring quality is good and the water temperature is bid high. *If you have tattoos, you may not be permitted to use the communal bathing areas. Then, there are two private family hot springs. You need to book them when you check in on that day. They cost 3,850JPY for 45min. Two of them are universal designs too. Also, there is a room for wheelchair users. A wheelchair is available for borrowing. You might want to request it in advance if you need it.
How about meals?
The local food experience for dinner and breakfast was wonderful. Don’t forget to bring an empty stomach. The portion tends to be big. You won’t be able to resist even you are full. Dinner and breakfast are served in a dining area, not served in your room. *You need to check in by 18:00. Then, inform the staff when you book a room with meals if you have any food allergies. They probably wouldn’t be able to prepare alternative food if you request on that day.
My impressions
All staff was very helpful, friendly, and proactive. They wouldn’t be sophisticated, but we were impressed with their hospitality. Also, the landlady is very sociable with a great smile and warm hospitality. All in all, we had a marvelous time at the ryokan. At last, the best season to stay here would be in spring or fall. You can take a walk while viewing the beautiful nature around here. Have a nice trip!
