Nishiyama Bekkan

The ryokan is well-known with a long history in Hiroshima.  If you are a connoisseur of Japan, I would recommend it.  The historical architecture with a garden is nice.  On the other hand, if this is your first stay at ryokans, I wouldn’t recommend it as facilities tend to be worn-out, and aged.  It’s old, not an investment in renovations.  You may feel stressed during your stay.  Also, there is no room with western beds.  You may feel awful sleeping on Japanese mattresses in tatami rooms.  Overall, the property tends to be not sophisticated.  If you are the type of person who can enjoy inconveniences, you should stay here.  The property would be great for couples, small groups, or families.  There is no minimum age requirement, but this wouldn’t be child-friendly.  Because there are no amenities for small children, no cribs, and no baby chairs, etc.  If you are going to stay here, I would highly recommend staying at a room in the Annex on 2F called ASAHI.  After booking a room in the annex, you may want to request ASAHI in advance by e-mail  Because most guests would want to stay at ASAHI.  The room tends to be worn out, especially the bathroom, but quaint.  Also, you can see amazing views of the garden and the Seto Inland Sea from the room.  If you are keen on Japanese culture, you must be excited.  All of the amenities are taken care of including minimum toiletries, yukatas, and green tea bags, etc.  There are POLA skincare products and Shiseido bath amenities in the bathroom.  You might want to request two Japanese mattresses layers in advance if you are not used to sleeping on tatami mats.  Room service is not available.  There is a convenience store nearby.  Then the property wouldn’t be a universal design.  There are some steps.  I wouldn’t recommend it if you bring people with weak feet. Wifi reception was available around the lobby only when I stayed in 2017.  Then there are small communal baths in-house.  They are not hot springs, though.  They are open from 6:00-10:00, 13:00-22:00.  There is no private family bath in-house.  Then the kaiseki food experience was good, but wouldn’t be special.  The portion tends to be big.  All meals are served in a traditional banquet hall.  It may be challenging for the western palate. The table in the dining area is separated by dividers that provide a decent level of privacy.  *Please note that inform staff when you book a room with dinner if you have any food allergies. They probably wouldn’t be able to prepare alternative food if you request on that day.  Then if you prefer western to Japanese cuisine, you can go out for dinner as there are some local restaurants around Onomichi Station.  You would need to take a taxi.  If this is your first visit to Onomichi, you may want to ask staff about recommended restaurants near the property.  They tend to be not attentive, but informative.  Overall the property would be reasonable.  This would be a just 2-star hotel.  I guess it’s OK.  Then access to the property would be easy if you take a taxi from Onomichi Station.  It takes 10min.  It costs around JPY1,500.  Free shuttle service is not available.  Then the best season to stay here would be in the spring or the fall season.  The garden would be very beautiful.  Anyway, when it comes to Onomichi, Shimanami-Kaido is one of the well-known places for cyclists in the world.  You should enjoy cycling too.  At last, don’t stay there for more than 2 days.  One night’s stay would be good enough for your unique experience.  Have a nice trip!  Welcome to receive any questions about the property from the below space.  *All information is as of the date that I posted on my blog.  **Check-in and out times 15:00/10:00  Check Availability and Pricing for the ryokan on Agoda
