Okunoin Hotel Tokugawa

Okunoin Hotel Tokugawa

What kind of onsen ryokan is Okunoin Hotel Tokugawa?

If you are looking for small modern ryokans in Nikko, you should stay here.  Perhaps, if you are looking for rooms with outdoor private baths, I would recommend it.  Overall, the ryokan wouldn’t be sophisticated, but very cozy, relaxed, and friendly.  On top of that, the property has great value for money.  The ambiance is tranquil, family-oriented, and comfortable.  The onsen ryokan would be great for families, couples, groups, or solo travelers.  There are 22 rooms only.  The property completely emphasizes private experiences for each guest.  We hardly met other guests during our stay.  Once we arrived here, welcome champagne was served at the lobby and we checked in while relaxing.  Then we were escorted to a beautiful tatami room with a peaceful Japanese garden view.

Is the location easy to access?

Yes, it would be easy from JR Nikko Station, Tobu Nikko Station, or Nikkō Tōshō-gū.  Free shuttle service is available from those places between 14:00 and 18:00.  You need to book it in advance.  Alternatively, you can take a taxi from Nikko Station.  It takes 10min and costs around JPY1,500.

Rooms I would recommend?

If you are going to stay here, I would recommend rooms with balconies.  You can chill out on the balcony with a beer in hand while enjoying white noise.  Then if you love outdoor baths, you may want to book rooms with private baths.  They are not hot springs, though.  Facilities tend to be a bit worn out, but the housekeeping was good.

How about toiletries & in-room amenities?

All of the amenities are taken care of including enough toiletries, yukatas, Japanese sweets, Chinese tea bags, a coffee machine, and a green tea set, etc.  There are POLA skincare products and bath amenities in the bathroom.  Also, a CD player, an air cleaner, binoculars for bird-watching, and massager were placed in our room.  Room service is available until 22:00.   Free Wifi reception was excellent on the property.  There is a vending machine in-house.  There is no convenience store nearby.  You may want to buy your necessities before coming here.  Complimentary milk, barley tea, and water are available near the communal baths.  Then this is child-friendly.  Staff can provide baby bouncers, chairs, meals, and picture books, etc. if you request in advance.  I noticed that a microwave oven was placed in the lobby to warm baby food.

How about In-house Facilities?

There are indoor and outdoor communal hot springs.  The spring quality wouldn’t be special.  They are open from 6:00-10:00, 15:00-24:00.  *If you have tattoos, you may not be permitted to use the communal bathing areas.  Also, there are 2 private family baths.  They are not hot springs, but they have amazing views at night.  You should try one of them.  They cost JPY3,300 for 45min.  They are open from 15:00-24:00.  The ambiance would be mysterious, magical, and charming as a small garden is illuminated.  You may want to book it in advance when you check in.  They are very popular.  Then Okunoin Hotel Tokugawa is an almost universal design.  There is a room called Fuji for wheelchair users.   Wheelchairs are available for borrowing.  There is a lift.  If you bring people with weak feet, you may want to inform the staff in advance as they can arrange a room on 1F.  It seems that each room on 1F has an outdoor private bath.

How about meals?

The local kaiseki food for dinner was just divine.  All ingredients were high-end, such as caviar, truffle, foie gras, and Tochigi beef, etc.  If you are a gourmet, you should try it.  The portion tends to be big.  Don’t forget to bring your empty stomach.   Dinner starts at 18:00, 18:30, or 19:00.  You need to check in by 18:30 if you have dinner on the property.  Then Japanese cuisine for breakfast tends to be mediocre if compare to dinner.  Breakfast starts at 7:30, 8:00, or 8:30.  All meals are served in a private room.  *Please note that inform the staff when you book a room with meals if you have any food allergies.  They probably wouldn’t be able to prepare alternative food if you request on that day.  Then, as far as I know, there wouldn’t be restaurants near the property.  The location is out of the way.  You may want to book a room with meals.

My impressions

All staff is friendly.  You can experience signature Japanese hospitality during your stay.  At last, the best season to stay here would be in spring or fall.  You can view a beautiful garden from your room.  Have a nice trip!  Welcome to receive any questions about Okunoin Hotel Tokugawa from the below space.  Check Availability and Pricing for the hotel on Agoda
