What kind of onsen ryokan is Kotohira Kadan?
If you are looking for onsen ryokans around Kotohira Onsen, you should stay here. The onsen ryokan with a long history would be one of the best in Kotohira Onsen. Perhaps, if you are looking for rooms with private onsen, you should stay here. You can soak in the private one while seeing a traditional well-kept garden. The ambiance is charming and quaint. The property would be great for couples, families, solo travelers, or groups.
Is the location easy to access?
It would be easy from Kotohira Station. Free shuttle service is available from the station. You need to book it in advance. Alternatively, it takes 20min on foot, but I wouldn’t recommend visiting on foot because there are many slopes and steps around the property. Then if you drive a car, you may want to ask the staff to pick you up from the parking lot. The location is a bit away from the property. It would be hard to walk if you have a lot of baggage, especially on rainy or snowy days.
Rooms I would recommend?
If you are going to stay here, I would recommend rooms in the Shogetsu Terrace building. The rooms are modern, stylish, and user-friendly. You can see a wonderful view while chilling out in the rooms. Facilities tend to be the latest. If you love hot springs, you should stay in rooms with private outdoor ones. Actually, most of the rooms have been renovated, but some haven’t yet. If this is your first stay at ryokans, you may want to book renovated rooms.
How about toiletries & in-room amenities?
Free wifi reception was good in Shogetsu Terrace. Also, I noticed that a PC was placed at the lounge to use someone. Complimentary coffee, tea, and soft drinks are available at the garden lounge. You can relax while listening to jazz and viewing a peaceful Mt.Kotohira. That’s precious time. Room service is available from 19:00-23:00. There is no convenience store nearby. You may want to buy your necessities before coming here. There is a vending machine in-house.
How about In-house Facilities?
There are communal hot springs. The spring quality wouldn’t be special. They are open from 5:00-10:00, 13:00-24:00. Also, there are two private family hot springs. They are available at JPY3,000 or JPY3,500 for 45min. They are open from 5:00-10:00, 15:00-23:00. You need to book in advance if you want to use them. Then if you bring small children or people with weak feet, you may want to book rooms with private hot springs. There are many steps on-site. This is a traditional wooden building, like a maze. Also, there is a universal design room for wheelchair users and wheelchairs are available for borrowing.
How about meals?
The local food experience was good, but not special. The portion tends to be average. Dinner was served in a private room and breakfast was served in a dining area. Most probably it depends on which room you book. *Please note that inform the staff when you book a room with meals if you have any food allergies. They probably wouldn’t be able to prepare alternative food if you request it on that day. Then, as far as I know, there wouldn’t be restaurants around the property. Most of the local papa-mama shops are closing early. You may want to book a room including meals.
My impressions
Staff tends to be not sophisticated. If you expect 5-star hotel service, this is not. I guess it’s ok. This is Kagawa prefecture. If you want to get much of an immersive traditional onsen ryokan experience, it’s well worth staying here. Have a nice trip!
