What kind of mountain hut is Auberge Tosayama?
If you are looking for rustic modern mountain huts with onsen in Shikoku, I would recommend it. Perhaps, if you are looking for perfect places to refresh in rich nature, you should stay here. This is an amazing property to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. The ambiance is lively, cozy, and tranquil. This is like a hideaway for adults. There are 16 rooms only. The property would be great for couples, families, small groups, or solo travelers. If you want to bring small children, you need to ask the staff before booking a room.
Is the location easy to access?
The location is 30min drive away from Kochi City. Free shuttle service is available from Orient Hotel Kochi at 15:00. It takes 30min by car. You need to book it in advance. Orient Hotel Kochi is located near Gurando Dori Station. You can go to the Hotel from Kochi Station by streetcar or Taxi. It takes 20min by streetcar or 10min by TAXI. It costs JPY1,000. I wouldn’t recommend driving a car when you visit Auberge Tosayama unless you are a local. There are many narrow steep mountain paths and one-way roads on the way to the property.
Rooms I would recommend?
If you are going to stay here, I would recommend rooms in the annex. This is like a mountain villa. We fully enjoyed white noise from the river with a beer in hand at the terrace. That’s precious time. The sky was completely filled with stars and it was so beautiful. It seemed like I could reach out and grab them with my hand. The rooms tend to be not user-friendly, but truly relaxing. A mall kitchen was installed in our room in the villa.
How about toiletries & in-room amenities?
All of the amenities are taken care of including enough toiletries, pajamas, bathrobes, yukatas, and bottled water, etc. You can travel light. Also, a CD player and humidifier were placed in our room. There is no TV in each room. Then there is no convenience store nearby. You may want to buy your necessities before coming here. Room service is not available. Complimentary coffee is available at the library in the main building. Also, there are many CDs which guests can borrow. Wifi reception was available around the front lobby only.
How about In-house Facilities?
There are indoor and outdoor communal hot springs. They are open from 6:00-9:00, 10:30-23:00. There is no private family hot spring. *If you have tattoos, you may not be permitted to use the public bathing area. Then the property is not a universal design. There are some steps. If you bring people with weak feet, you may want to book a room in the main building. It would be easy to move around.
How about meals?
The local cuisine for dinner and breakfast was good, especially Tosa beef. If you love it, you should order additionally at an extra charge. The portion tends to be average. All meals were served at a dining area in the main building. *Please note that inform the staff when you book a room with meals if you have any food allergies. They probably wouldn’t be able to prepare alternative food if you request on that day. Then, as far as I know, there is no restaurant around there. The location is deep in the mountains. You may want to book a room including meals.
My impressions
The staff tends to be warm, friendly, and helpful, but not sophisticated. If you expect 5-star hotel service, this is not. If you cannot find English speakers, you might want to write on paper what you want to say. Most of the young staff would understand English sentences. I hope you don’t mind. At last, don’t forget to check the weather forecast before booking a room. Have a nice trip!
