Asan Kotonami

Asan Kotonami

What kind of onsen ryokan is Asan Kotonami?

This is a modern mountain hut with private hot springs in Shikoku.  The environment surrounding the property was truly amazing, such as clear blue sky, crisp mountain air, nice breezes, and beautiful starry sky, etc.  We were overwhelmed by the beauty of nature.  If you love trekking, I would recommend it.  There are some interesting trekking courses around the property.  Shoes, poles, gloves, and jackets, etc., for trekking, are available for borrowing if you request in advance.  Overall the hardware is clearly outstanding and enhanced by the peaceful mountain views.  The property opened in May 2017.  Facilities tend to be the latest.  The ambiance would be lively, family-oriented, and tranquil.  The property would be great for families with small kids, couples, or groups, but not solo travelers.

Is the location easy to access?

Free shuttle service is available from JR Kotohira Station.  You need to book it in advance.  It takes 30min by car.

Rooms I would recommend?

If you are going to stay here, I would recommend rooms with private hot springs in the main building.  You can fully enjoy your private bath while hearing white noise from the river.

How about toiletries & in-room amenities?

All of the amenities are taken care of including enough toiletries, yukatas, samue outfits, a Nespresso machine with plenty of capsules, bottled water, and a Japanese tea set, etc.  You can travel light.  Also, this is child-friendly.  Staff can provide amenities, toys, and baby bouncers, etc. if you request in advance.  Then there is no convenience store nearby.  You may want to buy your necessities before coming here.  Room service is not available.  Fresh milk is delivered to your room every morning.  There is a vending machine for drinks on 1F.  Each room has floor heating.  The wifi reception was good in our room.

How about In-house Facilities?

There are large indoor and outdoor communal hot springs. They are open from 6:00-10:30, 12:30-24:00.  Also, there are two private family hot springs with black stone saunas.  If you stay in rooms of the cottage type, you can complimentary use two of them.  If you stay in rooms in the main building, you need to pay JPY4,000 for 60min or JPY6,000 for 90min.  You need to book if you want to use the private ones.  All of them are open from 6:00-10:00, 15:00-24:00.   *Please note that if you have tattoos and want to use the communal hot springs, use the reserved private family ones instead.  Then the property is pet-friendly.  If you bring your dogs, you need to inform the staff in advance.  You can stay with your dogs in rooms of the cottage type only.   Then the property is almost universal design.  There are lifts.  A wheelchair is available for borrowing.  If you bring people with weak feet, you may want to inform the staff in advance as they can arrange a room near the lift.

How about meals?

The food experience for dinner and breakfast was good, but wouldn’t be special.  The portion tends to be big.  All meals are served in a dining area.  Dinner starts at 17:30.  Breakfast starts at 7:30.  *Please note that inform the staff when you book a room with meals if you have any food allergies.  They probably wouldn’t be able to prepare alternative food if you request on that day.  Then, as far as I know, there is no restaurant around here.  The location is out of the way.  You may want to book a room including meals.

My impressions

Some staff is excellent, some are not.  If you expect 5-star hotel service, this is not.  It would be rated 3-star.  It seems that the software still has a long way to go.  Also, I noticed that there was a shortage of staff when we stayed in 2018.  Overall, the property has good cost performance.  If you want to spend your time leisurely in beautiful nature, the venue would be absolutory perfect.  We would definitely return again.  Anyway, the best season to stay here would be except for the summer season.  There would be many bugs around the outdoor hot springs in summer.  At last, the property would be busy between late April and early May, the third week of July and late Aug, weekends in Oct and Nov, and the end of the year and New year holiday.  If you want to chillax to the max, you might want to avoid staying during the above periods.  Have a nice trip!  Welcome to receive any questions about Asan Kotonami from the below space.  Check Availability and Pricing for the property on Agoda
