What kind of onsen ryokan is Kotohira Onsen Onyado Shikishimakan?
This is not a luxury ryokan, but really cozy, modern, and stylish. Also, the location is amazing. You can hang out around Konpira-san whenever you like. If you are looking for an onsen ryokan adventure in Kagawa prefecture, you should stay here. The external appearance of the building is historical, charming, and quaint. The inside is brand new as the property opened in Aug 2019. If this is your first time staying at ryokans, I would recommend it. Facilities tend to be the latest. The ambiance would be friendly, lively, and tranquil. On top of that, the property has great value for money. The property would be great for families, groups, couples, or solo travelers.
Is the location easy to access?
Yes, it would be easy from Kotohira Station. It takes 10min on foot from the Station. A free shuttle service is not available. Then if you drive a car, be careful. It would be a bit hard to find the parking lot. You may want to check your map in advance. The parking lot is a little away from the property. Also, there is a slope on the way to the property. If you bring small children or people with weak feet, you should inform the staff in advance as you may need some help.
Rooms I would recommend?
If you are going to stay here, I would recommend rooms on the highest floor possible as you can view peaceful landscapes. Overall, most of the rooms tend to be cramped, but the housekeeping was excellent. All rooms have twin beds on tatami mats.
How about toiletries & in-room amenities?
All of the amenities are taken care of including enough toiletries, yukatas, samue outfits, a coffee mill with coffee beans, and a green tea set, etc. Then there are some kinds of pillows and colorful yukatas which you can choose from. Room service is not available, but complimentary coffee, tea, Yakuruto, snakes, and ice pops, etc., are available in the lobby. There is a convenience store nearby. Also, there is a laundromat. There are vending machines for drinks including beer. The Wi-Fi reception was good on the property. Then this is child-friendly. Staff can provide baby cribs, amenities, and meals for small children if you request in advance.
How about In-house Facilities?
There are indoor and outdoor communal hot springs with saunas in-house. Actually, the communal outdoor baths are not hot springs, though. All of them are open from 15:00-10:00 the following morning. Then there are four complimentary indoor private family hot springs that you can use whenever they are not occupied. They are open for 24H. On top of that, there is a footbath near the entrance of the property. It’s open from 8:00-17:00. *If you have tattoos, you may not be permitted to use the communal bathing area. Then the property is almost universal design. There is one room for wheelchair users. Wheelchairs are available for borrowing. Also, if you bring people with weak feet, you may want to inform the staff in advance as they can arrange a room near the lift.
How about meals?
The local cuisine for dinner was good, but not so special. Dinner starts at 17:45 or 20:00. If you want to start dinner from 17:45, you may want to check in earlier for the better section. After dinner, local noodle for a night snack is served at the restaurant on 2F from 22:30. Then the buffet-style local cuisine for breakfast was good. The breakfast time is between 7:00 and 9:00. All meals are served in a dining area. *Please note that inform the staff when you book a room with meals if you have any food allergies. They probably wouldn’t be able to prepare alternative food if you request on that day. Then, as far as I know, there wouldn’t be nice restaurants for dinner around there. Most of the papa mama shops are closing before 18:00. You may want to book a room with meals.
My impressions
The staff tends to be friendly, but they looked so busy. There would be a shortage of staff during busy seasons. If you want to relax here in a tranquil atmosphere, you may want to avoid staying during Lunar New Year, late April to early May, the weekend of Oct and Nov, and the end of the year and the New Year holiday. The property would be busy during the above periods more than you expect. Have a nice trip! Welcome to receive any questions about the property from the below space.
