Genmyoan

Genmyoan

What kind of ryokan is Genmyoan?

When we arrived at the lobby, we were overwhelmed by the beauty of Amanohashidate.  This is a perfect place if you want to get much of an immersive “Amanohashidate view” experience as you expect.  Perhaps, if you are a connoisseur of Japan, I would recommend staying at Genmyoan.  Everything, such as architecture, interior, and decoration is top-notch. There are 17 rooms only.  We seldom met other guests during our stay.  On the other hand, if you are a hot spring freak, I wouldn’t recommend it.  There is no hot spring in-house. Genmyoan would be great for couples, families, or small groups, but solo travelers are not available.

Is the location easy to access?

Access to the property would be easy from Amanohashidate Station.  A free shuttle service is available from the Station.  When you reach the station, just call at 0772 22 2171.  The property is located on a hill.  There are some steep slopes around here.  I wouldn’t recommend driving a car yourself when you visit in the winter season.   Also, there is a convenience store within walking distance, but there is a long steep slope.  You may want to buy your necessities before checking in.  After checking in, you wouldn’t feel like going out.

Rooms I would recommend?

If you are going to stay here, I would recommend rooms with Amanohashidate views.  The views from spacious windows were indescribably beautiful.  It’s like a postcard.  Facilities tend to be not the latest, but well-maintained.  The housekeeping was excellent.  If you don’t want to sleep on Japanese-style mattresses in tatami rooms, you should book a western room with twin beds.   Probably, western-style rooms only have been recently renovated.  If this is your first stay at ryokans, you may want to book a western room as facilities are the latest.  Then, there are some modern rooms with outdoor private baths with awesome views.

How about services?

This is child-friendly.  Staff provides food, yukatas, and meals for children at additional charges if you request in advance.  Also, they can hold your luggage before check-in and after check-out.

How about In-house Facilities?

Genmyoan is not a universal design.  There are some steps.  There is no lift, but I noticed that wheelchair users were in the property.  If you bring people with weak feet, you may want to inform the staff in advance as they can arrange a room near the entrance.  Then there are indoor and outdoor communal baths with magnificent views.  All of them are open from 6:30-9:00, 15:00-23:00.  They are not hot springs, though.  There is no private family bath.  *If you have tattoos, you may not be permitted to use the communal bathing area.  You may want to book a room with an outdoor private bath instead.

How about toiletries & in-room amenities?

The Free Wi-Fi reception was good.  I noticed that PCs are placed in the lobby to use someone. All of the amenities are taken care of including minimum toiletries, yukatas, and green tea bags, etc.  A DVD, a CD player, and an air cleaner were placed in our room.  Also, some kinds of complimentary Japanese sake are available at a cozy lounge until 19:00.  Room service is not available.

How about meals?

Kyoto kaiseki food experience would be good, but not sophisticated.  It may be challenging for western palates.  Unluckily there wouldn’t be a nice restaurant around here.  Also, most of the local papa-mama shops are closing early in Amanohashidate.  You may want to book a room including meals.  *Please note that inform the staff when you book a room with meals if you have any food allergies.  All meals are served in your room.   If your group is more than 5 guests, all meals are served in a private room.

How about the staff?

All staff is professional, but not sophisticated.  If you expect 5-star hotel service, this is not.  Be mindful and respectful of the Japanese traditions here as it’s traditional accommodation.

My impressions

Overall, the price range would be high, but Genmyoan must leave a lasting impression.   Then don’t forget to check a weather forecast before booking a room.  That’s the most important.  Have a nice trip!  Welcome to receive any questions about Genmyoan from the below space.  Check availability and pricing for Genmyoan on Agoda
