Monjusou

Monjusou

What kind of ryokan is Monjusou?

This is a small luxury modern ryokan in Amanohashidate.  The property has been renovated and facilities tend to be the latest.  The hardware is clearly outstanding and enhanced by memorable views.  There are 29 rooms only.  The ambiance is serene, stylish, and sophisticated.   If this is your first time staying at ryokans, I would recommend it.  On the other hand, if you are a connoisseur of Japan, I would rather recommend staying at the sister inn, Monjusou Shourotei.  Monjusou would be great for families, couples, small groups, or solo travelers.

Is the location easy to access?

Access to the property wouldn’t be easy from Kyoto Station to Amanohashidate Station.  It takes 120min by train, but free shuttle service is available from Amanohashidate Station.  You need to book it in advance.  If you visit here by car in the winter season, you need to prepare snow tires.

Rooms I would recommend?

If you are going to stay here, I would recommend Japanese-style rooms on 1F.  Because you can directory go outside from the room and take a walk along the Amanohashidate canal while viewing beautiful pain trees.  That’s precious time.  Then if you don’t want to sleep on Japanese-style mattresses in tatami rooms, you should book Japanese western-style rooms with twin beds.  Also if you are looking for rooms with outdoor private baths, you should book deluxe suite rooms.  I’m not sure whether those private baths are hot springs or not.    *If you stay at deluxe suite rooms with private outdoor baths, check-in and out times 14:00/11:00.

How about toiletries & in-room amenities?

Free Wi-Fi reception was good, but sometimes slow after dinner in my experience.  I noticed that a PC was placed at the lobby lounge to use someone.   All of the amenities are taken care of including minimum toiletries, yukatas, samue outfits, a coffee machine, and green tea bags, etc.  There are skincare products in the bathroom.   Room service is not available.   Also, you can borrow rain boots, umbrellas, and beach umbrellas.

How about In-house Facilities?

There is a cozy lounge, a large terrace, and a reading room in-house.  You can chill out in the public spaces while drinking.   There is a vending machine for drinks.   There are small communal indoor and outdoor hot springs.  The spring quality wouldn’t be special.  All of them are open from 6:00-10:00, 15:00-23:30.  *If you have tattoos, you may not be permitted to use the communal bathing area.  You may want to book a deluxe suite room with an outdoor private bath instead.   Then Monjusou is not a universal design.  There is a lift.  If you bring people with weak feet, you may want to inform the staff in advance as they can arrange a room on 1F.  Wheelchairs are available for borrowing.

How about meals?

Then the Kyoto kaiseki food experience was wonderful.  The portion tends to be average.  All meals are served in a restaurant called “MON”.  Dinner starts from 18:00-19:00.  If you have dinner on the property, you need to check in by 18:00.  After dinner, don’t forget to visit the bar on 1F.  The ambiance is very cozy.  There is a wide variety of liquor.  Breakfast starts at 7:30, 8:00, or 8:30.  *Please note that inform the staff when you book a room with meals if you have any food allergies.  They probably wouldn’t be able to prepare alternative food if you request on that day.  Then, as far as I know, there wouldn’t be nice restaurants around there.  There is a convenience store, though.  Local papa-mama shops are closing early.  You may want to book a room with meals.

How about services?

This is child-friendly.  Staff provides yukatas, meals, futons, baby chairs, and tableware at additional charges.  Also, they can hold your luggage before check-in and after check-out.  Then the staff arranges flowers and cakes at additional charges if you want to celebrate an anniversary.  You need to request it in advance.

My impressions

Overall, the price range would be a bit high, but this is Kyoto.  If you get much of an immersive “Amanohashidate views” experience from your room, it’s well worth staying at Monjusou.  Have a nice trip!  Welcome to receive any questions about Monjusou from the below space.  *If you check-in after 18:00, you need to inform the staff in advance.  Check availability and pricing for Monjusou on Agoda
