The ryokan wouldn’t be luxury, but it’s really worth visiting here when you are in Japan. Perhaps, if you expect a typical classic Japanese ryokan adventure, you must stay here. On the other hand, if you prefer to stay at modern ryokans, this wouldn’t be. I would rather recommend Chuo Alps Mori no Kakure-yado Tokisumika or Relaxing Suwa Inn Sui Suwako. Two of them tend to be much modern, functional, and new. Anyway, Kashiwaya Honten is very charming and quaint, like a secret hideaway for adults. The ryokan would be wonderful for couples or solo travelers. Once you enter the building, you won’t feel like going out until check-out here. There are some wonderful private hot springs in-house. *Need to book them when you check-in at the front desk. If you are a hot spring lover, you must be excited so much during your stay. If you are going to stay here, I would highly recommend booking a room with a private outdoor hot spring. The spring quality is truly nice. The water temperature tends to be a bit high, though. You may need to add cold tap water before soaking in the bath. All staff is very warm, polite, and attentive. If you want to experience Japanese-specific hospitality, you must stay here. We were touched by their consideration. Also, the Japanese kaiseki food experience is amazing. If you love Japanese food, you must try it. Perhaps you might want to request something about food in advance by fax or phone if you are not used to eating Japanese cuisine. The food for dinner and breakfast is provided in a small private room in the dining area. *No meals served in a room. Also if you feel awful sleeping on Japanese-style mattresses in tatami rooms, you might want to request two mattress layers in advance to avoid having a backache. My mom always requests it when she stays at ryokans. Then wifi reception was good even though the location is in the countryside. On top of that, the check-in/out times are 3 PM / 12 PM. That’s a great service. Only my issue is that there is no nice view from the room, outdoor onsens, lobby, etc., Also a free public bus on a circular route from Besso Onsen station was very packed when we visited here on weekend. If you don’t have much luggage, you might want to walk from the station. It takes approx.15min. You can get a shuttle provided by the ryokan on the way back only. Anyway, don’t forget to take a walk around the ryokan. We felt that we were being pulled into old Japan when we were exploring the neighborhood. The sound of a bell from the temple was truly pleasing to our ears. At last, the best season to stay here would be except the summer season. It’s hot here in the season. You may feel reluctant to get in the baths. If you love hot springs very much, you must visit here in the winter season. You’ll feel thankful to soak in the baths while viewing beautiful snow. Have a nice trip! Welcome to receive any questions about the property from the below space. *All information is as of the date that I posted on my blog. About Kashiwaya Honten
Historical Bessho Onsen is located in an old quarter with great people in Nagano prefecture. Here you can find Kitamuki Kan-non Temple, a temple that is a pair with Zenkōji. “A visit to Zenkōji” is only complete when you visit both Zenkōji and Kitamuki Kan-non. Why don’t you rest at the Kashiwaya Honten to recover from the long journey? Your stay would be even more enjoyable to stroll into town dressed in a colorful yukata. You would feel like visiting more than “once in a lifetime”.
