What kind of onsen resort is Chikusenso Mt. Zao Onsen Resort & Spa?
This is a luxury boutique resort ryokan in Zao Onsen. If you are looking for luxury modern ryokans, you should stay here. Everything, such as architecture, furniture, decorations, hospitality, garden, and food, etc., would be truly sophisticated. This is absolutely top-notch. You can get the same service here as a five-star hotel. Perhaps if you are looking for modern rooms with private hot springs, I would recommend it. There are some amazing rooms with private ones.
The ambiance would be serene, tranquil, and stylish. The property would be great for couples, families, groups, or solo travelers. *A minimum age requirement of 6 applies. This is like a hideaway for adults. There are 30 rooms only. The property completely emphasizes private experiences for each guest. We hardly met other guests during our stay. Once we arrived at the property, the staff escorted us to a charming library lounge and served welcome drinks.

Rooms I would recommend?
If you are going to stay here, I would recommend a room with a private hot spring. The spring quality is very creamy, thick, and moist. We fully enjoyed our private one until check-out time. Then if you don’t want to sleep on Japanese-style mattresses on tatami mats, you should book a room with twin beds.
How about toiletries & in-room amenities?
All of the amenities are taken care of including enough toiletries, yukatas, pajamas, samue outfits, a coffee machine with capsules, a complimentary minibar including beer and a green tea set, etc. There was no skincare product. There were bath amenities in our bathroom only. There were a DVD and Blu-Ray player and an air cleaner in our room. Wi-Fi reception was excellent. The housekeeping was also great. Then room service is not available, but complimentary coffee is available at the library lounge. Also, wine and cheese were served in the evening when we stayed here. There is no convenience store nearby. You may want to buy your necessities before coming here.
Then, this is child-friendly. The staff provides amenities, yukatas, and samue outfits for small children.
How about In-house Facilities?
Facilities tend to be the latest. There are indoor and outdoor communal hot springs. Also, there are two private family hot springs that you can use for free. You need to book them in advance. All of them are open from 6:00-10:00, 15:00-24:00. *If you have tattoos, you may not be permitted to use the communal bathing areas. Then there is a small gym. It’s open from 7:00-22:00. You need to bring your own sportswear. You can borrow sports shoes only. Also, there is a bar, library, cozy terrace, souvenir shop, spa shop, Japanese garden, walking trail, etc. We were so excited to explore the property.
Then the property is not a universal design, but there is a universal room for wheelchair users. If you bring people with weak feet, you may want to inform the staff in advance as they arrange a room near the lift. Wheelchairs are available for borrowing. If you book a room with a private onsen, you wouldn’t need to move around once you enter your room.

How about meals?
The kaiseki food experience for dinner and breakfast was just divine. The food is also sophisticated. All ingredients are so fresh, tasty, and exquisite. If you are a gourmet, you must be happy. The portion tends to be average. All meals are served in a dining area. If you stay in suite rooms, they are served in a private room. Then after dinner, freshly baked bread was served for a night snack.
*Please note that inform the staff when you book a room with meals if you have any food allergies. They probably wouldn’t be able to prepare alternative food if you request it on that day. Then, as far as I know, there wouldn’t be nice restaurants near the property. The location is deep in the mountains. You may want to book a room with meals.

My impressions
Overall the property has a great value for money if compared to luxury resort ryokans in Hakone, Arima Onsen, Atami, etc. All staff would be surprisingly wonderful. If you want to get much of an immersive luxury resort ryokan experience in beautiful nature, it’s well worth staying. It will be your best memory. Have a nice trip!
