What kind of onsen ryokan is Yufuin Gettouan?
This is one of the amazing ryokans in Yufuin. If you are looking for a traditional mountain hut adventure, I would recommend it. Perhaps, if you are a hot spring freak, you should stay here. Each room has a wonderful outdoor private hot spring. Once we entered the property, we felt that we were pulled into old Japan. The stately architecture, interior, and decorations create a mature impression. The ambiance would be nostalgic, charming, and quaint. Yufuin Gettouan would be great for couples, families, small groups, or solo travelers. Also, this is child-friendly. Staff can provide yukatas, meals, and tableware for children if you request in advance.
Is the location easy to access?
Yes, it would be easy. A free shuttle service is available from Yufuin Station. It takes less than 10min by car. You need to book it in advance.
Rooms I would recommend?
If you are going to stay here, I would recommend deluxe villas in an annex. Each villa completely emphasizes private experiences for guests. The rooms in the annex are spacious, tranquil, and serene. The décor is “Japan minimalistic”, but truly relaxing. Facilities tend to be a bit worn-out, but well-maintained and clean. Then if you don’t want to sleep on Japanese-style mattresses in tatami rooms, you may want to book a room with twin beds on tatami mats.
How about toiletries & in-room amenities?
All of the amenities are taken care of including enough toiletries, yukatas, samue outfits, a complimentary mini-bar including beer, and green tea bags, etc. There are POLA amenities in the bathroom. The free WiFi reception was good in our villa. Room service is not available. Complimentary coffee, herb tea, and water, etc., are available at the lounge near the main building. It’s open from 7:00-11:00, 20:00-23:00. There is no convenience store nearby. You may want to buy your necessities before coming here.
How about In-house Facilities?
There are wonderful indoor and outdoor communal hot springs. They are open from 14:00-9:00 the following morning. Also, there are two amazing private family ones for guests who stay in villas. If you stay at a villa, you can use two of them for free whenever they are not occupied. They are open from 14:00-11:00 the following morning. *If you have tattoos, you may not be permitted to use the communal bathing area. Then Yufuin Gettouan is a very large and not universal design. There are some steps on-site. This is like a maze. If you bring people with weak feet, you may want to book a room in the main building. Actually, you wouldn’t need to move around once you enter your room as there is a private hot spring.

How about meals?
The kaiseki food experience was just divine. All local ingredients were so fresh, exquisite, and dainty. Each dish has a sense of the season and it’s like an art. If you are a gourmet, you must be excited. They have a nice Japanese sake list to complement the meal. The portion tends to be average. All meals are served in a private room. Dinner starts at 18:00 or 18:30. Breakfast starts at 8:00, 8:30, or 9:00. *Please note that inform the staff when you book a room with meals if you have any food allergies. They probably wouldn’t be able to prepare alternative food if you request on that day. As far as I know, there is no restaurant around the property. The location is out of the way. You may want to book a room including meals.
My impressions
All staff tends to be excellent, professional, and proactive. If you want to experience signature Japanese hospitality with a personal touch, you should stay here. Overall, the price range would be reasonable. We really got much of an immersive “traditional country life” experience in rich nature as we expected. Definitely, we would come back again.
