What kind of onsen ryokan is Ryotei Tanokura Ryokan?
If you are looking for authentic ryokans in Yufuin, I would recommend it. Perhaps if you are a connoisseur of Japan, you should stay here. The surrounding neighborhood is so quiet even though there are so many tourists on the main street. It’s nice to be able to escape from the crowds of people that pulling suitcases around Yufuin Station. It’s like you’re in another world. The ryokan would be great for couples, family, solo travelers, or small groups. This is like a hideaway for adults. There are 11 rooms only. We didn’t see other guests during our stay. Absolutely the property completely emphasizes private experiences for each guest.

Is the location easy to access?
Yes, it would be easy. A free shuttle service is available from Yufuin Station. You need to call 0977-75-8420 when you reach the station.
Rooms I would recommend?
If you are going to stay here, I would recommend rooms with outdoor private hot springs on 1F. You can chill out in the room while viewing a well-kept traditional garden. We fully enjoyed our private bath until check-out time. The spring quality is soft, smooth, and moist. Then if you don’t want to sleep on Japanese mattresses in tatami rooms, you may want to book a Japanese-western room with twin beds. The room is Japanese minimalistic, but truly relaxing.
How about toiletries & in-room amenities?
All of the amenities are taken care of including enough toiletries, yukatas, bottled water, and a Japanese tea set. There are THALGO JAPON amenities in the bathroom. Room service is not available. There is a convenience store nearby. The free WiFi reception was good on the property. Then this is child-friendly. Staff can provide meals, yukatas, and futons for small children if you request in advance. If you bring small children, you can book Japanese-style rooms only.
How about In-house Facilities?
Facilities tend to be worn out but the housekeeping was excellent. Then Ryotei Tanokura Ryokan is not a universal design. There is no lift. A wheelchair is available for borrowing, though. If you bring people with weak feet, you may want to book a room with a private hot spring on 1F. Once you enter your room, you wouldn’t need to move around. Then there are wonderful indoor and outdoor communal hot springs. There is no view from the outdoor baths. The indoor ones are open from 5:00-10:00, 15:00-25:00. The outdoor ones are open from 15:00-24:00. Also, you can use communal hot springs in the sister inn, Santoukan. The location is next to Ryotei Tanokura Ryokan. *If you have tattoos, you may not be permitted to use the communal bathing area.

How about meals?
The authentic kaiseki food was wonderful. It may be a little challenging for the western palate, but if you are a gourmet, you should try it. The food was very fresh and well presented. *Please note that inform the staff when you book a room with meals if you have any food allergies. They probably wouldn’t be able to prepare alternative food if you request on that day. Alternatively, you can go out for lunch and dinner. There are some nice restaurants in Yufuin.
My impressions
All staff tends to be professional, elegant, and first‐class. You can absolutely experience signature Japanese hospitality with a personal touch. Overall, the price range would be reasonable. It felt exclusive like some other luxury ryokans I have been to in this price range. It’s well worth staying here if you want to get much of an immersive Japanese traditional atmosphere.
