What kind of onsen ryokan is Hinoharu Ryokan?
If you are looking for small authentic ryokans in Yufuin, I would recommend it. There are 11 rooms only. This is like a hideaway for adults. We didn’t see other guests even though the property was fully booked. Absolutely the ryokan completely emphasizes private experiences for each guest. The surrounding neighborhood would be so quiet even though there are so many tourists on the main street during the day. Once you enter the property, it’s like you’re in another world. The ambiance is serene, charming, and quaint. Hinoharu Ryokan would be great for couples, solo travelers, small groups, or family.

Is the location easy to access?
It would be easy from Yufuin Station. The location is a 15min-walk from the station. A free shuttle service is not available.
Rooms I would recommend?
If you are going to stay here, I would recommend rooms with outdoor private hot springs on 1F. The rooms are Japanese minimalistic, but truly relaxing. We fully enjoyed our private bath until check-out time. That’s precious time. The spring quality was soft, smooth, and moist. If you are a hot spring freak, you should try it. We felt the luxury and authenticity at once. Facilities tend to be a bit worn out, but the housekeeping was excellent. Then if you don’t want to sleep on Japanese mattresses in tatami rooms, this is not for you. There is no room with western beds on tatami mats on the property.
How about toiletries & in-room amenities?
All of the amenities are taken care of including minimum toiletries, yukatas, tea bags, bottled water, and a Japanese tea set. There are Shiseido skincare products for men and women in the bathroom. Also, a DVD player, an air cleaner, and a loudspeaker were placed. Room service is not available. There is a convenience store nearby. Then free WiFi reception was good in the property when we stayed in March 2019.
How about In-house Facilities?
There are outdoor communal hot springs. Also, there are two outdoor and one indoor private family hot springs that you can use for free whenever they are not occupied. All of them are open from 7:00-23:00. *If you have tattoos and want to use the communal hot springs, use the private family ones, or book a room with a private one instead. Then Hinoharu Ryokan is disabled-friendly. The building on 1F only is a perfect universal design. There is room for wheelchair users. A wheelchair is available for borrowing. If you bring wheelchair users, I would recommend Hinoharu Ryokan. You may want to request a room on 1F near the entrance.

How about meals?
The Japanese kaiseki food experience was wonderful. It may be a little challenging for the western palate. Each delicious dish makes the most of the original taste of local ingredients. The portion tends to be average. All meals are served in your room or a private room in a dining area. *Please note that inform the staff when you book a room with meals if you have any food allergies. They probably wouldn’t be able to prepare alternative food if you request on that day.
My impressions
All staff tends to be professional, warm, and helpful. Service is exquisite, attentive, and very discrete. Definitely, you can experience signature Japanese hospitality with a personal touch. Overall the onsen ryokan has good value for money if compared to others in Yufuin. The experience is pure Japan and should definitely be tried. Have a nice trip!
