What kind of onsen ryokan is Kusatsu Onsen Boun?
If you are looking for typical onsen ryokans in Kusatsu Onsen, I would recommend it. Perhaps, if you want to experience ryokans for the first time without stress, you should stay here. The ambiance would be serene, tranquil, and modern. Traditional Japanese flower arrangements are displayed here and there on the property. It’s a lovely place and well designed and decorated. The property would be great for families, couples, small groups, or solo travelers.

Is the location easy to access?
Yes, it would be easy, but it takes 240min by bus. If this is your first-time visit to Kusatsu Onsen, you may want to take an express bus at Shinjuku Expressway Bus Terminal, Shibuya Mark City high-speed bus stop, or Tokyo Station Yaesu South Exit. Then get off at Kusatsu-Onsen Bus Terminal and just a 5min walk to the property. The location is perfect. You must be excited to take a walk around Yubatake in Yukata.
Alternatively, Kusatsu Onsen can be reached by express train from Ueno Station, but it is not recommended because you need to change to a bus on the way. If you want to know how to get there by train, please comment below. More detailed information is provided here.
Then a Free shuttle bus from Kusatsu-Onsen Bus Terminal is available. If you bring small children or people with weak feet, you might want to ask for a shuttle service from Kusatsu Onsen Bus Terminal. It takes just 5 minutes on foot, though. There is a steep slope on the way to the property. You need to book it in advance.
Rooms I would recommend?
If you are going to stay here, I would recommend superior or deluxe rooms. Facilities tend to be the latest. The rooms tend to be modern Japanese-style, functional, and spacious. The housekeeping was perfect. The décor is Japanese minimalistic but truly relaxing. On the other hand, I wouldn’t recommend standard rooms in the main building. Facilitates tend to be a bit worn out.
How about toiletries & in-room amenities?
All of the amenities are taken care of including minimum toiletries, yukatas, and a Japanese tea set, etc. The wifi reception was excellent on the property. Complimentary coffee is available at the library in the main building on 3F. Room service is available until 21:00. There is a vending machine for drinks in-house. There is a convenience store nearby.
How about In-house Facilities?
There are wonderful indoor and outdoor communal hot springs. The spring quality would be amazing. The water temperature tends to be a bit high. If you are a hot spring freak, you must be so happy. All of them are open from 14:00 to 10:00 the following morning. *If you have tattoos and want to use the communal hot springs, book a room with an outdoor private one.
Then the property is almost universal design. There are very few steps in the new building. If you bring people with weak feet, you may want to inform the staff in advance as they can arrange a room near the lift. Also, you may want to book a room with western beds. It would be much comfortable for wheelchair users. A wheelchair is available for borrowing.

How about meals?
The Japanese kaiseki food experience for dinner and breakfast was wonderful. The ingredients were high-end, such as sashimi, beef, and foie gras, etc. They have a nice sake list to complement the meal. The portion tends to be a bit big. All meals are served in a private room or your room. Dinner starts at 18:00 or 18:30. Breakfast starts at 8:00 or 8:30. *Please note that inform the staff in advance when you book a room with meals if you have any food allergies. They probably wouldn’t be able to prepare alternative food if you request it on that day. Then you need to check in by 19:00 if you have dinner on the property. Alternatively, you can go out for meals as there are some local restaurants around here.
My impressions
The most important I would like to highlight is the staff is really helpful, proactive, and friendly. I’m sure you can experience signature Japanese hospitality with a personal touch. Overall the property has great value for money. If you get much of an immersive “Onsen Ryokan” experience in Kusatsu Onsen, it’s well worth staying. Then the property would be popular and there are many return guests. If you want to chill out here in a tranquil atmosphere, you may want to avoid staying during Lunar New Year, late April to early May, weekends in Oct and Nov, and the end of the year and New Year holiday.
At last, if you stay here in the winter season, you can go to Kusatsu Onsen Ski Resort. Free shuttle service is available from the onsen town to the ski resort. Have a nice trip!
