What kind of onsen ryokan is Oyado Tamaki?
This is a luxury authentic ryokan in Ikaho Onsen. There are 26 rooms only. If you are looking for a room with an outdoor private onsen and nice views, I would recommend it. On the other hand, if you are not so keen on hot springs, this is not. Actually, I wouldn’t recommend Ikaho Onsen as a destination for overseas travelers, but for those living in Tokyo, it’s a great getaway just 160min from Shinjuku by bus. The ambiance would be tranquil, family-oriented, and serene.

Is the location easy to access?
Access to the property would be easy, but it takes around 150min. You can get an express bus from Shinjuku Expressway bus terminal or Tokyo Station Yaesu South Exit, and get off at Ikaho stone step street bus stop, and then a 5min walk to the property. Refer to the timetable. Alternatively, a free shuttle service is available from the bus stop. You need to book it in advance.
The location is in the center of Ikaho Onsen. Free shuttle service is available within the onsen town. If you bring people with weak feet, you might want to ask the staff when you go sightseeing around here.
Then the parking lot is a bit away from the property. Staff can pick you up by shuttle bus, so you may want to inform them in advance if you want to use it.
Where is the best accommodation for anniversaries?
If you are looking for a good place for a special occasion, the property would be one of the best in Ikaho Onsen. The staff arranges flowers and cakes to celebrate an anniversary at additional charges if you request in advance.

Rooms I would recommend?
If you are going to stay here, I would recommend rooms with private onsens and peaceful views. Facilities tend to be the latest. If this is your first time staying at ryokans, those rooms would be great. You can chill out at the private bath while viewing beautiful mountain landscapes in good weather. On the other hand, I wouldn’t recommend rooms without private onsens. Facilities tend to be outdated. There is no nice view.
Then if you don’t want to sleep on Japanese-style mattresses in tatami rooms, you should book a room with twin beds.
How about toiletries & in-room amenities?
All of the amenities are taken care of including enough toiletries, yukatas, pajamas, a green tea set, a humidifier, a DVD player, etc. There are some pillows which you can choose from. There are L’OCCITANER amenities in the bathroom. Room service is available until 24:00. Free Wi-Fi reception was good in our room. There is a convenience store nearby. *No drinks allowed.
How about In-house Facilities?
There are wonderful communal hot springs. They are open for 24H. Also, there is a private family hot spring. You need to book if you want to use it. It costs JPY3,240 for 50min. They are open between 14:00-24:00. *If you have tattoos, you may not be permitted to use the communal bathing area. You should use the reserved family hot spring instead.
There is a vending machine for drinks and a small bar in the lobby. The bar is open between 20:00-24:00.
The property is almost a universal design. If you bring wheelchair users or people with weak feet, you might want to inform the staff in advance as they can arrange a room near the lift and standby for some help.

How about meals?
The kaiseki food experience for dinner was wonderful. The portion tends to be big. Don’t forget to bring your empty stomach. All meals are served in your room or a dining area. Dinner starts from 18:00, 18:30, or 19:00.
*Please note that inform the staff when you book a room with meals if you have any food allergies. They probably wouldn’t be able to prepare alternative food if you request it on that day.
Then, as far as I know, there is no nice restaurant around here. You may want to book a room including meals. Local papa-mama shops are closing early.
