Resort Kumano Club

Resort Kumano Club

What kind of villa is Resort Kumano Club?

This is a boutique Japanese-style mountain resort villa with private outdoor baths.  There are 40 rooms only.  Some rooms have outdoor private baths, but not hot springs.  If you are going to Kumano Kodo, I would recommend it.  Actually, it would be hard to find nice accommodation around here.  The location is deep in the mountains.

On the other hand, if you expect a sophisticated service, this is not.  Their service is more like typical chain hotels rather than the authentic signature Japanese hospitality with a personal touch.

The ambiance is cozy, tranquil, and family-oriented.  The property would be great for families with kids, groups, or couples, but not solo travelers.

Is the location easy to access?

The location is a 15min drive away from Kumanoshi Station.  Free shuttle service is available as below.  You need to book it in advance.
From Kumanoshi Station to Resort Kumano Club at 13:30, 16:30, 18:00
From Resort Kumano Club to Kumanoshi Station at 08:55, 10:40, 11:45

FYI, it takes 180min by express train from Nagoya Station to Kumanoshi Station.  Alternatively, if you take an express bus from Meitetsu Bus Center, it takes around 210min.

Rooms I would recommend?

If you are going to stay here, I would recommend a room with a private outdoor bath.  There are communal hot springs on-site, but the location is away from the accommodation villas.

How about toiletries & in-room amenities?

All of the amenities are taken care of including minimum toiletries, samue outfits, a Japanese tea set, and bottled water, etc.  Room service is not available.  There is a vending machine for drinks.  Complimentary coffee, tea, and sweets, etc., were available at the café between 14:30 and 19:00.  Also, complimentary many kinds of Japanese sakes, beer, and shochu, etc., are available at the bar between 20:00 and 22:00. Free Wifi reception is available around the front desk only.  We couldn’t connect to the internet in our room.  *As of January 2021, it is under construction.  By the time you visit, you will be able to use Wi-Fi in your room.  Then there is no convenience store nearby.  You may want to buy your necessities before coming here.

How about In-house Facilities?

There are communal hot springs.  They are open from 6:00-9:30, 15:00-23:30.  *Please note that if you have tattoos and want to use the communal ones, book a room with a private outdoor bath

Then bicycles are available for borrowing between 8:00 and 17:00.

The property is very large, like a small village.  It may be hard to move around there.  Especially at night, the premises are completely dark.  There are few street lights to help you see the stars in the night sky.  Also, there are many slopes.  On the way back from the communal hot springs, we got lost.  If you stay here, I would recommend checking in early and explore the property during daylight hours.

Then there is a free shuttle service on-site, but depending on the time of day, you may have to wait for a bus.  Walking would be faster than waiting for the bus.

Then if you bring someone with weak legs, you should inform the staff in advance as they arrange a room near the reception.  Also, you may want to book a room with a private outdoor bath.  Wheelchairs are available for borrowing.

How about meals?

The local cuisine for dinner was amazing.  Also, the buffet-style local food for breakfast was good.  All drinks including alcohol are complimentary during meals.  All of them are served in a dining area.   *Please note that inform staff when you book a room with meals if you have any food allergies.  They probably wouldn’t be able to prepare alternative food if you request it on that day.

After dinner, don’t forget to visit the bar.  There was a live guitar performance when we stayed.  If you are a happy drinker, the resort would be a paradise.

Then, as far as I know, there wouldn’t be nice restaurants around the property.  The location is out of the way.  You may want to book a room including meals.

My impressions

Overall, the property had great value for money, but it seems like the price range is going up every year.

If you fully enjoy beautiful nature, the property would be best in Kumano.

Then if you want to relax in a tranquil atmosphere, you may want to avoid staying during late April to early May, the third week of July to late Aug, weekends in Nov, and the end of the year and New Year holiday.  The property would be crowded.

Anyway if you are going to stay here, you may want to join the “Kumano Kodo Tour” organized by the property.  It costs 2,500JPY per person.  You need to bring your trekking shoes or sneakers. Also, you need to book it 5 days in advance of your check-in.  The tour is rained out.

At last, don’t forget to check the weather forecast before booking a room.  If it’s rainy, it would be a bit hard to move around on-site.  Have a nice trip!  Welcome to receive any questions about the property from the below space.  Check Availability and Pricing for the property on Agoda
