What kind of onsen ryokan is Hakuunsou?
This is a luxury modern ryokan in Yugawara, not Atami. There are just 17 rooms only. There are wonderful rooms with outdoor private hot springs. The ambiance would be serene, comfortable, and relaxed. The hotel would be great for couples, families, solo travelers, or small groups. *A minimum age requirement of 6 applies.
Is the location easy to access?
Yes, it would be easy if you take a taxi from Yugawara Station. It costs around JPY1,600. It takes 10min by car. Actually, there is a bus stop near the property, but there are many slopes around there. I wouldn’t recommend taking a public bus from the station. Free shuttle service is available from the property to the station after checking out ONLY. It takes around 60min from Tokyo Station to Yugawara Station by train.
Rooms I would recommend?
If you are going to stay here, I would recommend rooms with private hot springs. Others wouldn’t be special. We fully enjoyed our private one while hearing white noise from the river. The spring quality is soft, moist, and smooth.
How about toiletries & in-room amenities?
All of the amenities are taken care of including enough toiletries, yukatas, a complimentary minibar including beer, a coffee machine with capsules and a green tea set, etc. There are some colorful yukatas in the lobby which you can choose from. Also, a CD player, a DVD player, and an air cleaner are placed in our room. The wifi reception was good on the property. Then room service is not available. There is no convenience store nearby. You may want to buy your necessities before coming here.
How about In-house Facilities?
Overall, facilities tend to be outdated except for the lobby, the dining room, and rooms with private hot springs. The property is not a universal design. There is no lift. If you bring people with weak feet, I wouldn’t recommend it. Then there are small indoor and outdoor communal hot springs. They are open from 15:00-11:00 the following morning. Also, there is an Asian-style private family hot spring. You need to book it when you check in. You can use it for free for 40min. It’s open from 6:30-10:00, 15:00-23:50. If you book a room without meals and you want to use it, you need to pay an additional fee. *Please note that if you have tattoos and want to use the public hot springs, use a reserved one instead.
How about meals?
The Japanese kaiseki cuisine for dinner was wonderful. If you are a gourmet, you should try it. All local ingredients were high ends, such as fish, beef, and vegetables. The only dessert was mediocre, though. The portion tends to be average. All meals are served in a dining area. The tables in the dining room are separated by dividers that provide a decent level of privacy. Dinner starts at 17:30 or 20:00. Breakfast starts at 8:00, 8:30, or 9:00. *Please note that inform the staff when you book a room with meals if you have any food allergies. They probably wouldn’t be able to prepare it if you request it on that day. Then the property is out of the way. As far as I know, there is no restaurant within walking distance. If you go out for dinner, you need to go around Yugawara Station by taxi.
My impressions
The staff tends to be not sophisticated, but they would be helpful, warm, and attentive. Overall, the location is very nice to refresh from hustle and bustle of city life. If you are looking for nice hot spring resorts for a weekend trip from Tokyo, Yugawara Onsen would be one of the best. Enjoy being completely lazy and recharge your batteries. Have a nice trip!
