What kind of onsen ryokan is Nansuikaku?

This is not a luxury onsen ryokan, but truly relaxing. All staff is so friendly. If you are looking for a cozy onsen ryokan in Fukuoka, I would recommend it.  The location is a 65min bus ride from Hakata Bus Terminal. There are 29 rooms only, but the property is as large as a maze. It is a historic ryokan with a magnificent gate and the inside is very clean and renovated.

When we arrived at the ryokan, we were taken to the lobby on the first floor with a beautiful view, had coffee while listening to the sound of the river, and checked in.

Then if you are looking for a room with a private hot spring, I would recommend it.  There are various types of outdoor hot springs, but some people use them on day trips too, so if you fully enjoy hot springs, you may want to book a room with a private onsen.

The ambiance is serene, charming, and tranquil.  Nansuikaku would be great for couples, families, small groups, or solo travelers.  Solo travelers can book rooms on weekdays only.

Is the location easy to access?

It would be easy. Take a JR Kyushu Bus at Hakata Bus Terminal. Then get off at Nansuikakumae Bus Stop. The bus stops in front of the ryokan. It takes 60 to 70min. Bus fare is JPY890 for adults, JPY450 for children.

If this is your first visit to Fukuoka, you may be worried about where you should get off, so you may want to show the below Japanese sentence to a bus driver when you get on a bus. The bus driver will let you know when you arrive at the bus stop.

Please let me know when you reach “Nansuikakumae Bus Stop”

Alternatively, take JR Sasaguri Line called JR Fukuhoku Yutaka Line from Hakata Station and get off at Sasaguri Station. It takes 20 minutes. Then free shuttle service is available from Sasaguri Station at 15:00.  You need to book it by 2 days in advance. It takes 30min by car from the station.  Also, you can take a taxi from Sasaguri Station.  It costs around JPY4,000. Please note that this is a rural station and cabs are not always available in front of the station.

Rooms I would recommend?

If you are going to stay here, I would recommend a room with a private hot spring.  We fully enjoyed our private one until check-out time while hearing white noise from the river.  The spring quality tends to be soft, smooth, and moist.  Facilities are the latest.  The housekeeping was excellent.

Then if you don’t want to sleep on Japanese-style mattresses in tatami rooms, you may want to book a room with twin beds on tatami mats.

How about toiletries & in-room amenities?

All of the amenities are taken care of including enough toiletries, yukatas, Japanese sweets, and a Japanese tea set, etc.  Also, CD players, humidifiers, and baby cribs are available for borrowing if you request in advance.  Free WiFi reception was available around the lobby only.  We couldn’t connect to the internet in our room when we stayed in 2018.  Complimentary coffee, tea, and juice are available in the lobby.  Room service is available for drinks only between 15:00 and 22:00. There is a vending machine for drinks.  There is no convenience store nearby.  You may want to buy your necessities before coming here.  *Drink from outside is prohibited.

Also, this is child-friendly. Staff provides meals and yukatas if you request in advance. Children up to 2 years old can sleep together for free.

How about In-house Facilities?

There are indoor communal hot springs with saunas.  Also, there is a variety of outdoor hot springs. The indoor communal ones are open from 5:45 to 9:30, 11:00-23:00.  The outdoor ones are open from 11:00-22:30. *If you have tattoos, you may not be permitted to use the communal bathing area.

Then there are seven private family hot springs.  You can use one of them for free whenever it’s not occupied.  If you want to use the others, you need to pay an additional fee JPY1,620 for 40min.

The outdoor baths are located a little further away and take about five minutes to walk to.

Then Nansuikaku is not a universal design.  There are some steps. If you bring someone with weak legs, you may want to inform the staff in advance as they arrange a room near the entrance.  A wheelchair is available for borrowing.  I noticed during my stay that some wheelchair users were on the property.

Then there is a spa treatment shop. It’s open between 11:00 and 21:00. The pricing is reasonable. You need to make an appointment in advance by e-mail

How about meals?

The Japanese local food was wonderful, especially Miyazaki Beefsteak.  They use a lot of seasonal ingredients just right for that season.  It may be a little challenging for the western palate but the food was tasty, exquisite, and fresh.  If you prefer meat dishes, it’s best to let them know in advance.

All meals are served in the dining area or in your room. This depends on which room you have booked. If you have booked a room with a private onsen, all meals will be served in the room.

If you have booked any other rooms, your meals will be served in the dining area. If you prefer to dine in your room, you will need to pay an additional 2,000 yen per person.

Then inform the staff when you book a room with meals if you have any food allergies.  They probably wouldn’t be able to prepare alternative food if you request on that day.

Then there is no restaurant around here.  You may want to book a room including meals.

My impressions

Overall, the property has good value for money. You can experience signature Japanese hospitality during your stay.    If relaxation in rich nature is your main goal in Fukuoka, it’s well worth a visit.
