What kind of onsen ryokan is Motoyu Ishiya?
This is like a small cultural museum. The location is in Fukatani Onsen in Kanazawa city. Around here still retains the nostalgic atmosphere of old Kanazawa. Once we entered the property, we felt that we were being pulled into old-Japan. This is a lovely place to stay with attention to every detail. Everything, such as architecture, interior, and decorations is authentic. If you are a connoisseur of Japan, Motoyu Ishiya would be one of the best in Kanazawa. On the other hand, if this is your first time staying at ryokans, I wouldn’t recommend it as facilities tend to be outdated. If you are the type of person who can enjoy inconveniences, you should stay here. The ambiance would be serene, charming, and quaint. The property would be great for couples, families, small groups, or solo travelers.

Is the location easy to access?
Maybe yes, if you take a taxi from Morimoto Station. It costs around JPY1,500. It takes 10min by car from the station to the property. It takes 7min by train from Kanazawa Station to Morimoto Station. A free shuttle service is not available. Alternatively, you can take a West Japan JR Bus for Nakao from the number 4 bus stop of Kanazawa Station’s East exit at 14:20 or 17:40. Then get off at Fukayamotoyu Bus Stop. The property is in front of the bus stop. It takes 40min from Kanazawa Station. There are only 2 buses in a day. If this is your first visit to Kanazawa, you may be worried about where you should get off so you may want to show the below Japanese sentence to a bus driver when you get on a bus. Then you wouldn’t miss the bus stop even if you fall asleep.
Please let me know when you reach “Fukayamotoyu Bus Stop”.
Rooms I would recommend?
If you are going to stay here, I would recommend traditional rooms called Kujaku no Ma, or Tori no Ma. These rooms are very unique, but not functional and not user-friendly. The housekeeping was excellent, though. Then the traditional wooden building has no soundproofing. My ear sometimes caught some noise, such as footsteps from the upstairs, people talking in the hallways, and slamming doors. If you are a light sleeper, this may be an issue. Then there is no room with twin beds. If you don’t want to sleep on Japanese-style mattresses call futon on tatami mats, you should find others. Also, there is no room with a private hot spring. This is one of the authentic ryokans.
How about toiletries & in-room amenities?
All of the amenities are taken care of including minimum toiletries, yukatas, Japanese sweets, and a Japanese tea set, etc. Room service is not available. Also, free WiFi reception was patchy in our room when we stayed in 2018, but we could connect to the internet around the lobby only.
How about In-house Facilities?
There are small indoor and outdoor communal hot springs in brownish-yellow color. There is no view from the communal ones, but the spring quality is truly amazing, thick, and creamy, like skin location. If you have tattoos and want to use the communal hot springs, you may want to find others. Unluckily, there is no private family hot spring and no room with a private hot spring on the property. All of them are open from 6:00 to 23:00. Then Motoyu Ishiya is not a universal design. There are many steps. There is no lift in the historic building. If you bring people with weak feet, this is not. Then there is a vending machine for drinks in-house, but there is no convenience store nearby. You may want to buy your necessities before coming here.

How about services?
If you have time, you should check in before 5 PM, and let’s join a free tour of a Noh stage. That’s a great experience. *The tour is scheduled not every day. Then they can hold your luggage before check-in and after check-out.
How about meals?
Authentic Kaga kaiseki food was wonderful. All of the local ingredients were so fresh, exquisite, and testy but it may be challenging for the western palate. The portion tends to be small. If you are a big eater, you may need some night snacks. Basically, all meals are served in a private room. If you stay in a special room in the annex, all meals are served in your room. *Please note that inform the staff when you book a room with meals if you have any food allergies. They probably wouldn’t be able to prepare alternative food if you request it on that day. Then, as far as I know, there is no restaurant around here. The location is out of the way. You may want to book a room including meals.
This is not a luxury authentic ryokan, but if you really get much of an immersive pure Japan experience in Kanazawa, it’s well worth staying here. The staff tends to be not sophisticated, but they are friendly. If you cannot find an English speaker at the reception, you might want to write on paper what you want to say. Most of the young staff would understand English sentences. I hope you don’t mind. Have a nice trip! Welcome to receive any questions about Motoyu Ishiya from the below space.
