What kind of ryokan is Yamanoo?
This is like a Samurai residence. It’s like you’re in another world. Once we arrived at the property, an elegant staff escorted us to a beautiful tatami room with an amazing garden view. We checked in while having matcha tea and Japanese sweets. Yamanoo is one of the top-notch ryokans in Kanazawa. Also, this is one of the well-known gourmet ryokans. The experience is pure Japan and should definitely be tried. If you are a connoisseur of Japan, the property would be one of the best choices. On the other hand, I wouldn’t recommend it if this is your first stay at ryokans. You may feel overpriced when you check out. The ambiance is traditional, charming, and quaint. There are four rooms only. The property completely emphasizes private experiences for each guest. We hardly met other guests during our stay. Yamanoo would be great for couples, solo travelers, business persons, family, or small groups. *A minimum age requirement of 13 applies.

Is the location easy to access?
Yes, if you take a taxi. It takes 10min by taxi from Kanazawa Station. It costs around JPY1,500. A free shuttle service is not available. It would be a bit inconvenient from the station, but the atmosphere around the property would be very much Kanazawa. The location would be perfect, near Higashi Chaya district. If you stay here, you can overlook a beautiful traditional townscape. Don’t forget to take a walk around Higashi Chaya before breakfast and after dinner. There would be many tourists around there in the daytime, but there would be few people in the early morning and at night. Then if you go sightseeing before check-in, you should use the Baggage delivery service in Kanazawa Station at an additional charge. It would be very useful.
Rooms I would recommend?
If you are going to stay here, I would recommend rooms with views of the garden. The traditional garden is incomparable. I could watch the view forever. The traditional wooden building has a long history, but surprisingly well maintained. Also, the property has good facilities. I guess the owner often invests in equipment. The room is Japanese minimalistic, but truly relaxing. There is a wooden bathtub in each room. Then, there is no room with western beds. If you don’t want to sleep on Japanese-style mattresses called futon in tatami rooms, you may want to find others.
How about In-house Facilities?
Unluckily, there is no communal bath and no hot spring. If you are a hot spring freak, I would rather recommend staying in Yamashiro Onsen, Kaga Onsen, or Yamanaka Onsen in Ishikawa prefecture. Then Yamanoo is not a universal design. There are some steps, but there is some strong young staff and they can carry wheelchair users with wheelchairs. If you bring people with weak feet, you may want to inform the staff in advance as they can arrange a room on 1F. Then, there wouldn’t be a convenience store nearby. You may want to buy your necessities before coming here.

How about toiletries & in-room amenities?
All of the amenities are taken care of including enough toiletries, yukatas, bathrobes, tea bags, bottled water, and a green tea set, etc. There are SHISEIDO bath amenities in the bathroom. Room service is not available. Then free WiFi reception was available in the lobby only. I couldn’t connect to the internet in my room when I stayed in 2019.
How about meals?
Kaga kaiseki food experience was just divine. The food is top-notch. It may be challenging for the western palate, but it’s well worth trying it. Dinner starts from 17:30 to 19:30. The staff came to our room and we were escorted to a private room for dinner. All meals are served in a private room in the main building on 2F. *Please note that inform the staff when you book a room with meals if you have any food allergies. They probably wouldn’t be able to prepare alternative food if you request it on that day. Alternatively, you can go out for dinner as there are many restaurants around Kanazawa Station. You may need to take a taxi unless you have a car.
Overall if you want to get much of an immersive “authentic Japanese ryokan” experience as you expect, it’s well worth staying here. All staff is professional, helpful, and welcoming, but be mindful and respectful of the Japanese traditions here as it’s a very traditional ryokan. Have a nice trip!
