Most of the traditional ryokans in the Hida Takayama area have many steps. If you are taking someone with weak legs, we would recommend the ryokans in the list below.
Suihoen has a luxury accessible room with a wonderful private outdoor hot spring bath. The view from the outdoor bath is also spectacular. All staff were very attentive and willing to help us when we needed to move around.
Then, Miyama Ouan Kyoritsu Resort has an accessible room. You can move around the buildings in a wheelchair. If you contact staff in advance, they will arrange a room close to the reception desk.
Then, Hidaji is not completely accessible. There are steps at the entrance. However, because it is a one-story building, wheelchair users can move freely inside the building. If you contact staff in advance, they can arrange for you to stay in a room with less distance to move. In addition, all rooms have private hot spring baths.
In Hidatei Hanaougi and Hanaougi Bettei Iiyama, guest rooms, dining areas, and communal baths are on tatami mats, which are not wheelchair accessible, but there are few steps throughout the building, making it easy to move around. Wheelchairs can be used only for transportation within the buildings. If you contact staff in advance, they will arrange a room near the reception desk. When we stayed, the staff were all very cooperative.
Then, staying in a room with a private onsen is convenient. You will not need to move around once you are in your room.
