What kind of city hotel is THE THOUSAND KYOTO?
This is a stylish hotel near Kyoto Station. If this is your first visit to Kyoto, you may want to stay here. I thought that the property would be like a typical chain business hotel. Because it is rated a 3-star hotel, but I was betrayed by the hotel, in a good sense. It’s one of the best in Kyoto.
The hotel is like a contemporary art museum. Everything, such as architecture, interior, furniture, and decorations, etc., is sophisticated.
Then all staff was excellent. If this is your first visit to Kyoto, you may want to ask hotel concierges about recommended spots as they are informative.
Then if you are looking for a good place for a workaction in Kyoto, the hotel is one of the best.
On the other hand, if you are looking for a very much Kyoto-like atmosphere, this is not the hotel for you. The surrounding environment is that of a normal town. This hotel is close to Kyoto station, so it can’t be helped. The view from most of the rooms is also nothing special. Some rooms face the cemetery.
The hotel would be great for couples, families, groups, solo travelers, and business persons, etc. It completely emphasizes private experiences for each guest even though this hotel is large.
TOP5 Best Hotels and Ryokans for Solo Travelers
Is the location easy to access?
It takes a 5min-walk from Kyoto Station.
Rooms I would recommend?
If you are going to stay here, I would recommend a room with a terrace and an inner garden. You can chill out at a terrace with a beer in hand after a long day out. That’s precious time.
How about toiletries & in-room amenities?
All of the amenities are taken care of including enough toiletries, yukatas, samue outfits, bathrobes, tea bags, an illy coffee machine, bottled water, and a Japanese tea set. Also, complimentary skincare products are available if you request by tablet provided in each room. DVD players, air cleaners, and voltage converters are available for borrowing. Room service is available between 6:00 and 26:00. Turn-down service is available if you stay in the Suite or Premier rooms. The free wifi reception was excellent.
Then, this is child-friendly. Baby baths, pajamas, cribs, and bed guards, etc., are available for borrowing if you request in advance. There are two nursing rooms on 1F and 2F. *Only children of elementary school age and younger can sleep with one person per bed for free.
How about In-house Facilities?
The facility is brand new as it opened on JAN 2019. There is a nice gym, bedrock baths, communal hot water baths, and dry saunas. *A minimum age requirement of 16 applies. All of them are available at JPY3,729. You can use the gym only for free. They are open between 7:00 and 22:00. Sportswear, running shoes, and yoga mats, etc., are available for rent at JPY500, but availability and sizes may be limited. You may want to bring your own. *If you have tattoos, you wouldn’t be able to use the spa area only.
Then there is a spa treatment and a souvenir shop on-site. There is a convenience store within 5min walking.
Then the hotel is a universal design. Wheelchairs are available for borrowing. If you bring someone with weak legs, you may want to inform the staff in advance as they arrange a room near the lift.
How about meals?
There are wonderful Italian, Japanese restaurants and a café & bar in-house. Children’s menus are also available. Vegetarian meals can be prepared if you request in advance.
If you are a gourmet, I would recommend the Italian restaurant. Each dish was very fresh, exquisite, and well presented.
Then, you can choose either Japanese cuisine, an Italian buffet, or room service for breakfast. We fully enjoyed the buffet. The variety of dishes was not so quite extensive, but each dish tends to be a high standard.
Alternatively, you can go out for meals as there are many restaurants around Kyoto Station.
My impressions
Overall, the hardware and software are outstanding. When we visit Kyoto, we always stay in the Higashiyama area where the atmosphere is very much Kyoto, but for this trip, we didn’t have enough time to move around, so we stayed at THE THOUSAND KYOTO.
The hotel offers a high level of convenience and functionality, making it a comfortable place to stay at any time of the year. It also offers excellent value for money. We definitely return again next year.
