What kind of business hotel is Miyako Hotel Hakata?
I decided to stay at this hotel in early July, during the rainy season with heavy clouds, when I had to go to Fukuoka on a business trip. To get straight to the point, it was an upscale business hotel with easy access from Fukuoka Airport, a pool on the rooftop, a restaurant and bar, and a relaxing and comfortable ambience.
Unfortunately, it was raining when I arrived at Fukuoka Airport that day, but I did not need an umbrella because the hotel I was staying at is directly connected to East 7 Exit of Hakata subway station. I took the subway from Fukuoka Airport and got off at Hakata Station. Then, after a few minutes of walking, I entered through the hotel entrance near East 7 Exit and took the elevator to the reception desk on the third floor. I arrived around 5:00 p.m., and it was a bit crowded with people checking in. I sat on a sofa in front of the reception counter and waited for about 15 minutes. In the center of the lobby, there were many sunflowers in full bloom, just in time for the summer season.
I booked a room with a small terrace overlooking Hakata Station. Upon entering the room, there was a bathroom and a closet, and further on, a double bed was on the left. In front of the double bed was sofas and a table, and on the window side was the small terrace. Stepping out onto the terrace, there was also sofas and a small table overlooking the Hakata Station roundabout.
Then the room’s carpet was decorated with Hakata textile patterns and the bedboard was decorated with botanical artwork. The bed was made with a mattress originally developed with Sealy. It was a special bed that emitted negative ions every time you turned over. A tablet was placed by the bedside to control the air conditioner, curtains, and lighting. The TV screen also allowed me to check the Wi-Fi passwords and the availability of restaurants, the rooftop pool, and the hot springs. The minibar offered juices, beer, colas, Perrier, and other beverages for a fee. Room service offered beef curry, udon noodles, Hakata cod roe rice bowl, sea bream chazuke, steak bowl, cheese platter, etc. for around JPY2,000.
For a while, I decided to grab a beer from the mini-bar in my room and relax on the terrace. As I stepped out onto the balcony, I could hear the sound of water cascading down the waterfall-like wall by the rooftop pool, creating a relaxing ambience. Since this hotel is located in front of Hakata station, I expected to hear the sound of cars and buses coming and going on the terrace, but this sound of running water drowned out the noise of the station to a great extent. In addition, the entire wall of the terrace was planted with plants, creating a cool environment. During the hot summer season, it was wonderful to be able to enjoy the sound of running water and greenery while staying right in front of Hakata Station.
It was already getting dark when I suddenly realized that it was getting darker, so I decided to go out for dinner. There are many nice restaurants around Hakata Station, but I was already tired at that time, so I decided to go to a tempura restaurant on the second floor of the same building as the hotel. In addition to the hotel, this building has a convenience store and Tully’s Coffee in the basement, a drugstore on the first floor, and a tempura restaurant, a motsunabe restaurant, and a fish restaurant on the second floor. The only restaurants in the hotel are an international restaurant on the 13th floor and a cafe on the 3rd floor.
After dinner, I decided to visit a swimming pool on the top floor. At night, the poolside and restaurant were lit up, creating a romantic mood. The weather was hot and humid during the day, but the poolside at night felt pleasantly breezy. I decided to sit by the pool, order a glass of champagne, and enjoy the open-air urban resort setting for a while. I really wanted to enjoy a Jacuzzi bath next to the rooftop pool while gazing at the night sky over Hakata, but the day was covered with heavy clouds, so I could not see anything when I looked up at the sky. Also, it is difficult to construct skyscrapers in the city center of Fukuoka City because of the proximity of the airport. Therefore, I was disappointed that I could not enjoy the “night view” in Fukuoka City. The pool can be used all year round. The water temperature is 38 degrees Celsius even in the coldest winter. Swimwear can be rented.
The next morning, I woke up around 6:00 a.m. I decided to make a cup of coffee from the Nespresso coffee machine in my room and relax on the sofa on the terrace. Looking out from the terrace onto the rotary in front of Hakata Station, it was quiet, with very few people or cars coming and going, as it was before commuting hours.
Then, before breakfast, I decided to use an indoor onsen bath and a sauna. On this day, unusually for the rainy season, it was sunny from the morning. Soaking in the onsen while looking at the beautiful blue sky made me feel relaxed from the morning.
Then, I headed to the restaurant on the 13th floor for breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Since it was a weekday, there seemed to be many business guests staying at the hotel. Besides, the restaurant was crowded. I took a seat by the window. The restaurant has a high vaulted ceiling, and through the spacious windows I could see the blue sky and the city of Hakata, which was refreshing. Normally, the restaurant serves a Japanese-Western buffet of about 90 dishes, but when I stayed, it was not a buffet-style because it was during the coronavirus pandemic. On this day, I was able to choose between Japanese or Western food. I had the American breakfast. It included an omelette with spicy cod roe called mentaiko cream sauce, fresh vegetable salad, ham, smoked salmon, Camembert cheese, fruit yogurt, smoothies, and freshly baked bread.
After breakfast, I returned to my room, brewed a cup of tea using the elegant Koishiwara ware teapot and teacups provided in the room, and relaxed on the terrace before checking out and leaving the hotel before 12:00 p.m. Overall, this is not a luxury hotel, but considering the price range, the facilities, rooms, location, service, restaurant, etc., were all excellent for my stay.

Is the location easy to access?
The hotel is directly connected to East 7 Exit of Hakata Subway Station. It is about 15 minutes from Fukuoka Airport by train. A cab from the airport costs approximately JPY1,300 and takes 15 minutes.
Then, there is a multi-story parking lot, available for JPY2,000 per day.
Rooms I would recommend?
All rooms are functional, user-friendly and modern in design, but the views are nothing special. It can’t be helped that the hotel is located in front of the station. If you are going to stay here, I would recommend a room with a corner room with a terrace. When making a reservation, you may want to request a room on a higher floor. It is not always possible to get a room on a higher floor by making a request, but it may be possible depending on availability. Probably, the rooms will be filled from the upper floors in the order in which the reservations are received. Some rooms on lower floors have a view of the old buildings next door.
Then, the train noise did not bother me at all, even though the hotel is near Hakata station.
How about toiletries & in-room amenities?
All of the amenities are taken care of including enough toiletries, pajamas, bathrobes, a coffee machine with capsules, bottled water, and tea bags. There are ELLE SPA bath amenities in the bathroom. The free WIFI reception is good. Also, you can watch YouTube, Hulu and Abema TV, etc. on TV. Room service is available between 7:00 and 23:00. There is a convenience store on B1.
Also, this is child-friendly. The staff provides slippers, toothbrushes, toothpaste, etc. Baby cribs are available if you request it in advance. Free breakfast for pre-school children. *Up to one child of elementary school age or younger can sleep with an adult guest for free.

How about In-house Facilities?
There is an outdoor pool, indoor communal onsens, saunas, Jacuzzi, and foot bath on the top floor. They are open between 6:30 and 22:00. Only the communal onsens are between 6:30 and 24:00. *Operation hours may change depending on the season and weather. Swimming wear is available for rent.
The outdoor pool was smaller than I had expected. It is not a swimming pool for people who want to swim for exercise. There is a private elevator from your room to the top floor.
Then the outdoor pool and the indoor communal onsens can get crowded on weekends, so it’s a good idea to check the TV in your room for crowds before you go.
*The outdoor pool, jacuzzi, and foot bath cannot be used on strong windy or typhoon days.
*For children, the outdoor pool is open to those over 120cm tall and 6 years old.
*Babies who have not yet had their diapers removed are not allowed to use the indoor communal onsens.
*Children are not allowed in the pool between 19:00 and 23:00.
*Beach balls, Beach boats and floats are not allowed in the pool.
This is a universal design. There is a universal room for wheelchair users. If you bring someone with weak legs, you may want to inform the staff in advance as they arrange a room near the lift. Wheelchairs are available for borrowing.
