Jeugiya

Jeugiya

What kind of machiya house is Jeugiya?

This is an amazing traditional villa in Kyoto.  If you love Kyoto, it’s the best place. The property is a private Kyoto machiya located along the Shirakawa River in Gion, a neighborhood lined with antique stores and long-established small restaurants. There is probably no other machiya house where you can feel the breath of Kyoto more than here. The famous writer Yasunari Kawabata even praised the Kyoto-like atmosphere of this machiya house when he visited here. This area is really a wonderful place to visit many times if you like Kyoto.

Also, there are many popular restaurants in the neighborhood, from upscale Italian to French, sushi restaurants, izakaya *Japanese pubs, and trendy bars.

The building was built over 160 years ago in the Gion machiya style and has been renovated with the latest facilities to make it more comfortable for guests.

Although Yasaka Shrine is only a five-minute walk away, once you pass through the noren curtain, you will find yourself in a surprisingly quiet ambiance, protected by a magnificent exterior wall.

As you enter through the front door, you will see a wonderful folding screen depicting a story from the Heian period. The Japanese-style room was decorated with paintings of maiko and hanging scrolls drawn by famous artists. The Japanese-style alcove was decorated with seasonal flowers. There are some very valuable paintings and artifacts placed here and there.

There are two traditional Japanese-style rooms and a Western room with a Taisho Roman-style, surrounded by a Japanese-style terrace called engawa with a view of the well-kept garden.

In particular, after it rains, the colors of the moss, pine trees, and garden stones become brighter and more lustrous, creating a tasteful atmosphere, and you will be impressed by the unique charm of Kyoto.

The time spent sipping matcha green tea and relaxing on the terrace with a view of the small Japanese garden is irreplaceable. It’s truly worth staying here.

Then the bathrooms are made of Koyamaki, a type of Japanese cypress, which has an enveloping scent that makes for a luxurious bath time. A wide selection of high-quality bath amenities is available, including L’Occitane.

The machiya house is located in a quiet residential area in the center of Kyoto city, 10 minutes walk from Gion Shijo Station, Yasaka Shrine and Chion-in Temple. 1 group can rent the machiya house with a maximum of 4 people. Children under 12 years old are not allowed to stay in the machiya.

Overall, this is the place for those who are at all interested in traditional Japanese architecture, interior design, decoration, gardens, and atmosphere. If you want to feel as much like a samurai, this is the best place for you. If not, I would rather recommend staying in a luxury hotel.

Is the location easy to access?

It’s easy if you take a taxi from Kyoto Station. It takes 15min by car and costs around JPY1,500. Please note that most of the TAXI drivers wouldn’t know the machiya house, so show the address and TEL No. in the below Japanese as they can enter the phone number into the car navigation system to confirm the destination.

十宜屋
〒605-0082 京都府京都市東山区中之町246
電話番号 075 561 0865

Alternatively, it takes less than 10min on foot from Gion-Shijo Station. If you have a lot of luggage, you may want to take a cab from Kyoto Station.

How about toiletries & in-room amenities?

All of the amenities are taken care of including enough toiletries, yukatas, pajamas, and a Japanese tea set.  The free WiFi reception was good.

Then Jeugiya is not a universal design.  If you bring people with weak legs, you may want to find other machiya houses.

Also, there is a convenience store nearby.

How about meals?

The Japanese food for breakfast was good. If you want to try it, you need to order it in advance. The staff will prepare the breakfast in a lacquer box for you. It costs 3,000JPY per adult.  *Please note that inform the staff when you book a room with breakfast if you have any food allergies.  They probably wouldn’t be able to prepare alternative food if you request on that day.

Then dinner is not offered on the property, but there are many restaurants, shops, and cafes around here.  Most of them are open from 11:00 AM except for fast food shops.  You may want to book the machiya house with breakfast.

My impressions

The most important I would like to highlight is the owner is welcoming, helpful, and warm.  Also, he is very informative. If this is your first time visiting Kyoto, you might want to ask him about recommended spots, restaurants, or events, etc.

Overall, Jeugiya has great value for money if you are a group or family.

Then the best season to stay here is in spring or fall.  You can see many breathtaking views while taking a walk around here.  Also, in the spring and fall, the gardens and temples around here are lit up at night, so stop by for a walk after dinner.

Then if you are lucky, you may see genuine Maikos.  You have many chances to see fake ones around Kiyomizu Temple in the daytime, though.  If you want to see genuine Maikos, you might want to visit around Hanamikouji Dori or Miyakawa-Cho near the property between 17:00 and 18:00.  There would be many amateur photographers standby around there.

Then during your stay here, you don’t have to go far by train or bus because there are many wonderful spots within walking distance. Take your time to relax and enjoy the true Kyoto.

Have a nice trip!  Welcome to receive any questions about Jeugiya from the below space.  You need to inform the staff of your expected arrival time in advance.  The owner will be standing by at the property.  Check Availability and Pricing for the property on HP
