Ryokan Shinsen

What kind of accommodation is Ryokan Shinsen?

I love this ryokan.  If you are looking for top-notch ryokans in Miyazaki, you should stay at Ryokan Shinsen.  Absolutely this is one of the best in Japan.  Perhaps, if you are a connoisseur of Japan, I would recommend it.  You can get much of an immersive “traditional Japanese way” as you expect.  We felt the luxury and authenticity at once.  The ambiance is very charming, serene, and tranquil.  The ryokan would be great for couples, family, solo travelers, or small groups.  If you bring small children under 13 years old, you may want to inform the staff in advance.  This is like a hideaway for adults.  There are only 13 rooms.  Absolutely Ryokan Shinsen completely emphasizes private experiences for each guest.

Is the location easy to access?

It would be a bit inconvenient if this is your first visit to Kyushu.  A free shuttle service is available from Takachiho Bus Center.  It takes just 5min by car.  You need to book it in advance.  When you go to Takachiho Bus Center, you can take an express bus from the west exit of Miyazaki Station, Miyazaki Airport, Kumamoto Station, Hakata Bus terminal, or Fukuoka International Airport.  If this is your first visit Kyushu, you may be worried where you should get off so you may want to show the below Japanese sentence to a bus driver when you get on a bus.  Then you wouldn’t miss the bus stop even if you fall asleep.

Kindly let me know when you reach “Takachiho Bus Center”

Where is the best accommodation for anniversary in Kyushu?

If you are looking for venues for special occasions, the property would be one of the best.  The staff arranges flowers and cakes to celebrate an anniversary at additional charges if you request in advance.

Rooms I would recommend?

If you are going to stay here, I would recommend rooms with outdoor baths.  They are not hot spring, though.  You can chill out at the bath while viewing a traditional small garden.  Check Availability and Pricing for the ryokan on Booking.com or Agoda

How about toiletries & in-room amenities?

All of the amenities are taken care of including enough toiletries, a green tea set, a coffee machine, bottled water, bathrobes, and yukatas.  Room service is not available.  Then there are some kinds of fashionable colorful yukatas which you can choose.  You might want to ask the staff for help when you wear colorful Yukata.  Putting on cotton kimonos with Obis would be difficult more than you expect.  I’m Japanese and even I couldn’t wear it myself.

How about In-house Facilities?

Overall, facilities tend to be the latest.  Floor heating was installed in our room.  There is no hot spring and no communal bath.  Then Ryokan Shinsen is not a universal design.  If you bring people with weak feet, you may want to inform the staff in advance as they can arrange a room near the entrance.  There is no convenience store nearby.  You may want to buy your necessities before coming here.

How about meals?

Kaiseki food for dinner and breakfast was just divine.  It may be a bit challenging for the western palate but it’s worth trying it.  You can enjoy the food while viewing a traditional well-kept garden.  All meals are served in a private room.  After dinner, baked sweet potatoes were served at our room for a night snack.  *Please note that inform the staff when you book a room with meals if you have any food allergies or dietary needs.  They probably wouldn’t be able to prepare alternative food if you request on that day.  Then, as far as I know, there is no restaurant around here.  Local papa-mama shops are closing early.  You may want to book a room with meals.  After dinner, the staff brings you to Takachiho Shrine to watch Takachiho Yokagura.  That’s an amazing experience.

My impressions

All staff tends to be sophisticated, warm, and helpful. The landlady is very sociable, elegant, and lively.  Sincere and wonderful hospitality greeted us the moment we started parking our car.  If you expect signature Japanese hospitality with a personal touch, you should stay here.  The property must leave a lasting impression.   Anyway, the best season to stay here would be in spring or fall.  You can see breathtaking views while taking a walk around Takachiho Gorge.  If you get on a boat at Takachiho Gorge during the above seasons, you might want to arrive at a boat dock before 8:00 AM on weekdays.  You wouldn’t need to make a long line.  Have a nice trip!  Welcome to receive any questions about Ryokan Shinsen from the below space.  If you check-in after 17:00, you need to inform the staff in advance.  Check Availability and Pricing for the ryokan on Booking.com or Agoda
