What kind of hotel is mesm Tokyo, Autograph Collection ?

On a weekend in October, after a hot summer and with the refreshing autumn weather, we decided to stay at this hotel, which we had always wanted to stay at least once. To get straight to the point, there are some luxury hotels in Tokyo with great views from the upper floors, but it is very rare to find a luxury hotel where you can see the Tokyo bay, the greenery of the park, and the Tokyo Sky Tree while feeling the fresh breeze from the balcony, so this was a very precious experience for me.

We got off at Hamamatsucho station and walked to the hotel. It took about 10 minutes. The hotel was located on the 16th through 26th floors of Waters Takeshiba, a commercial building overlooking the Hamarikyu Gardens and the Sumida River. At the entrance of the building, a staff member in a black uniform with a genderless design greeted us in a unique style with his hand on his chest. As we entered the building, we were greeted by ear-pleasing foreground music playing from Yamaha’s high-performance sound system. On either side of the passageway, unique artwork seemed to represent the entrance to another dimension. We were mesmerized by the impact of the wall art.

We then took the elevator up to the 16th floor where the lobby lounge is located, and as soon as the elevator doors opened, we were enveloped in the scent of an original fragrance. This fragrance was created to evoke the atmosphere surrounding the sea in Takeshiba and the metropolis of Tokyo. They adjust the fragrance seasonally to suit the humid Tokyo climate. Upon exiting the elevator, one was greeted by modern artwork depicting the flow of people crossing with traditional water drawers, and further on was the open-air lobby lounge. The spacious 9-meter-high ceilings and expansive windows offered an unspeakable view of the city in front of us. We were often dazzled by the beautiful view of the spectacular Tokyo Bay area and the historic Hamarikyu Gardens. This hotel was truly a place where the energy and creativity of the metropolis were perfectly blended.

Then looking up at the ceiling, the ceiling object representing the surface of sparkling waves was also impressive. As at the ground floor entrance, state-of-the-art audio equipment played foreground music that pleasantly stimulated the sense of hearing. On either side of the hotel’s reception counter, origami paper artwork inspired by the waves illuminated the midnight blue color of the theme color.

We completed our check-in formalities at the reception counter and the staff escorted us to our room. This time, we booked a Garden View room with balcony in Chapter 2. When we opened the door to our room, we found a spacious entrance. Turning down the hallway of the room, on the left was a bathroom made entirely of marble from floor to wall. Further on, to the left was a Simmons king bed, with a TV screen in front of the king bed, and a long sofa and round table by the window. Then most fascinating of all, there were exciting items here and there that were not placed in other hotels. For example, there was a Casio electric piano, trunk cases, and a set of amenities in the shape of thick books, all of which made for a wonderful space full of attention to detail.

While the low ceilings were a slight concern during our stay, the separation between the living room and bathroom was eliminated, giving the room a spacious feel that one would not expect from a 43m² space.

Then we went out onto the balcony, where a table and chairs were set up, and a stunningly beautiful, crisp autumn sky and a spectacular view spread out in front of us. From the balcony, we could clearly see people strolling through the Hamarikyu Gardens. The Sumida River emptying into Tokyo Bay, the Tokyo Sky Tree in front of us, and the Kachidoki high-rise condos on our right gave us a luxurious view of energetic Tokyo. The ever-changing blue sky with fantastic clouds floating in the sky and reflecting on the surface of Tokyo Bay was an inspiring scene that soothed our hearts. On the other hand, we were a little concerned about the thin, translucent walls on either side of the balcony, which lacked a sense of privacy. Some people may also be bothered by the fact that they can hear the sound of the neighboring rooms.

Then we made matcha powdered green tea prepared in the room and sat for a while on the balcony chairs, feeling the pleasant breeze, and then enjoy the chocolates prepared on the round table while admiring the spectacular view. The aroma and astringency of matcha tea, which could be felt slowly in the mouth, created a taste of exquisite harmony with the sweet chocolate. The combination of fine chocolate and matcha green tea was, contrary to our expectations, superb. Incidentally, instructions on how to make matcha and delicious coffee were explained in a video on a tablet provided on the side table in the room.

Afterwards, we headed to Chef’s Theatre, a French restaurant on the 15th floor, for dinner. As we were shown to our table overlooking the beautiful night view, the staff brought out a menu list like an art book. We ordered a course menu inspired by the autumn harvest season. I was particularly impressed with the dish of Hokkaido venison wrapped in bacon, tender and plump, roasted and served with a red wine and black pepper sauce. This restaurant is often fully booked, so it is recommended to make reservations early.

After dinner, a free event was being held in the lobby at 8:30 p.m., featuring performances by artists. Most of the live performances were of piano, wind, and string instruments, but on this day we were able to enjoy a live performance of nagauta and shamisen. It was a wonderful experience, as we never expected to be able to enjoy a live performance of traditional Japanese nagauta songs against the stunning night view of the Tokyo Bay Area. The lobby of this hotel was like a visit to the near future, a place where we could feel the cutting edge of Tokyo, a city that is constantly evolving.

After this, there was a bar in the back of the lobby with a mixologist, but it was crowded, so we decided to return to our room. Then we ordered a bottle of Moët Chandon Moët Imperial champagne from room service, which we enjoyed while sitting in the chairs on the balcony and admiring the night view. There are very few luxury hotels that allow you to enjoy the amazing Tokyo night view from the balcony of your room, so if you stay at this hotel, a room with a balcony is the best option. The view from the large windows of the nearby Conrad Tokyo overlooks the Hamarikyu Gardens, Tokyo Bay, and the Sky Tree, but the view from this hotel’s balcony is even more dynamic and expansive, giving a sense of energetic Tokyo.

The next morning, we woke up before 7:00 a.m., brewed coffee from the specialty coffee shop “Sarutahiko Coffee” prepared in the room, and enjoyed the aroma of the rising coffee while admiring the clear autumn sky and the wonderful view of the big city from the balcony.

We were getting hungry by now, so we decided to go to the restaurant called Chef’s Theatre on the 16th floor for breakfast. We went there a little after 8:00 a.m. It was already crowded, but we were lucky enough to be shown to a table by the window. We enjoyed our breakfast while enjoying the view of Hamarikyu Gardens and the business district. Although there were not many seats, the tables were spaced widely apart, making it a comfortable and spacious place. The restaurant also had an open kitchen so you could see the kitchen, giving the restaurant a lively ambiance.

At the time of our stay, it was during the the coronavirus pandemic, so only the American Breakfast was available. The menu consisted of apple black vinegar, fresh squeezed orange juice, pineapple, kiwi, and banana smoothies, vegetable salad, fruit, yogurt, consomme soup, freshly baked croissants, peach and cherry danishes, chocolate and green tea muffins, and pain au chocolat. In addition, there was a choice of six main dishes: ham and cheese omelet, crab and mushroom omelet, croute au champignon, eggs Benedict, rich pancakes maple syrup, and brioche French toast. Coffee and tea were made by the barista. The food was delivered at a brisk pace, so there was no long and frustrating wait.

After breakfast, we decided to visit the gym on the 17th floor. It is available 24 hours a day. The gym was not large, but it was equipped with the latest training machines. They do not rent sportswear or running shoes, so you will need to provide your own. Unfortunately this hotel does not have a swimming pool.

After this, we returned to our room, took out Heartland beer from the mini-bar, sat on the balcony chairs again without getting tired of it, enjoyed the spectacular view spread out in front of us, completed check-out procedures on the tablet provided in the room, and left the hotel before 12:00 pm. By the way, beer, mineral water, and orange juice in the mini-bar were available free of charge.

Overall, we felt that this is a luxury hotel that is not only “just a modern, glitzy hotel,” but also a hotel that pays attention to every detail and is full of fun to discover. It was a precious experience for us to be exposed to a dynamic side of Tokyo. In particular, we will never forget the spectacular view from the balcony of our room.
