Fufu Kawaguchiko

Fufu Kawaguchiko

What kind of luxury boutique resort is Fufu Kawaguchiko near Mt.Fuji ?

In the cold winter season of late January, we took an express bus from Shinjuku Expressway Bus Terminal, got off at Kawaguchiko Station, and took a 15-minute cab ride from there. The resort was located on high ground a short distance from the lakeside of Kawaguchiko. It was a low-rise building on a spacious site, with a modern appearance in harmony with nature. We really wanted to stay here during the fall foliage season, but we could not get a booking, so we decided to stay during the colder months. It is cooler here than in Tokyo, but the dry winter air made Mt. Fuji look even more magnificent and beautiful than usual, and I was impressed by its dignified appearance. We were worried that it might snow since it was awfully cold, but the day was amazingly clear and it was a spectacular view of Mt. Fuji.

When we arrived by cab, we were greeted by the resort staff. Firewood was tastefully stacked at the entrance, and upon entering the lobby lounge, plants were placed here and there, creating an open space that seemed at one with nature. After checking in, we had herbal tea and enjoyed the view of Mt. Fuji from the lobby lounge. I have seen Mt. Fuji many times before, but from here it was very special. Everything about the resort was well calculated, from the sunlight changing with the seasons and time of day, to the architecture, interior design, and décor. It is nothing short of spectacular.

The stylish wooden interiors and furniture on the grounds are made from trees that were cut down during the construction of the resort. Also, The hallways are also decorated with photos of trees and plants that grew on the property when the resort was built.

After completing the check-in formalities, the staff showed us to our room on the ground floor. All rooms have private hot spring baths, and if the weather is nice, all rooms have a view of Mt. Fuji.

Upon entering the room, one could smell the unique aroma of essential oils. Then, the room was decorated and furnished with refined wood and warmth, comfortable sofas, wooden tables, and houseplants, making it a relaxing and comfortable place to stay. The TV was 40 inches with Youtube, VOD, and mirroring. There was also a blu-ray player, bluetooth speakers, and a wooden humidifier.

On the balcony, there is a bioethanol fireplace that produces no toxic substances, and if you ask the butler, he will light it for you. You can enjoy it for about 2 hours. Next to the balcony, there was a private hot spring bath with a bathtub made of Fuji lava rock. The private hot spring bath had fixed louvers so that they cannot be seen from outside, but through the louvers we could see Mt. Fuji. We didn’t go anywhere after check-in, but instead enjoyed our private onsen with a view of Mt. Fuji, and relaxed in our lovely room while listening to our favorite music on Amazon music.

Then we were also wonderfully impressed with the resort’s breakfast and dinner. Each dish was elaborate, and the creative Japanese cuisine was very satisfying, with a good combination of elegant Japanese dishes. I was particularly impressed with the wagyu beef grilled on lava stones from Mt. Fuji.

After dinner, we went to the lobby lounge where we checked in. We were surprised to see that the ambience was completely different from that of the daytime. The lobby lounge and the trees in the courtyard were lit up, glowing fantastically and creating a romantic ambience. Numerous light bulbs hung from the ceiling like stars in the sky, and aroma candles on the wooden tables were flickering faintly, giving off a warm glow. I felt as if I had wandered into the world of a picture book. Fuji floated in black, like a shadow picture, against the backdrop of the illuminated trees on the grounds. It was freezing cold, almost as if it was snowing, but we enjoyed a cup of hot chocolate ordered from the bar while warming ourselves by the fireplace outside on the terrace.

And the next day, I woke up early to catch a glimpse of Mt. Fuji illuminated by the morning sun, and it was well worth it. The morning sun shone divinely on the snow-capped slopes of Mt.Fuji. It was a very cold day during our stay, but we were very lucky to have clear skies with not a cloud in sight. Then we also had breakfast with a magnificent view of Mt. Fuji. It was a very luxurious time. After breakfast, we left before 10:00 a.m. to go to Itchiku Kubota Art Museum, which was only a few minutes’ walk from here, though we were sorry to leave.

If I were to raise a disadvantage, it would be that it is difficult to book a room due to its popularity. Especially during the best seasons in spring and fall, most days are fully booked.

Then the resort is perfect for couples, families with children and groups, or solo travelers. It has a total of 32 suites, all with outdoor hot spring baths. There are also communal indoor hot spring baths on the property, but most guests didn’t seem to use them. I used it before dinner and breakfast and did not see any other guests.

Is the location easy to access?

You can take an express bus from Shinjuku Expressway Bus Terminal, JR Bus Tokyo Station Expressway Bus Terminal, or Shibuya Mark City, then get off at Kawaguchiko Station. It takes about 2 hours. *Tokyo Station is so huge that even as a Japanese I often get lost. Make sure you have plenty of time to get around.

Alternativily, from Haneda Airport, there is also a Keihin Kyuko Bus service to Kawaguchiko Station. The journey time is approximately 150 minutes. *As of July 2022, this route is out of service due to the cronavirus pandemic.

There is a way to get there by train, but since there are transfers, express buses are easier to travel by.

The resort is located 15min by taxi from Kawaguchiko Station. It costs around JPY2,000.  A free shuttle bus is not available.

Rooms I would recommend?

If you are going to stay here, I would recommend a room on 3F or 4F. We stayed on the first floor, but rooms on the third or fourth floor would have better views. Our room was functional, user-friendly, and spacious.  Facilities were the latest. The subtle lavender flavor made us so relaxed.

How about toiletries & in-room amenities?

All of the amenities are taken care of including enough toiletries, pajamas, bathrobes, samue outfits, green tea bags, coffee bags, and a complimentary mini-bar including soft drinks and beer. You can travel light. Complimentary drinks, such as beer, coffee milk, water, coke, wheat tea, and popsicles are available near the communal bath areas. There are THANN, POLA, and Shiseido amenities in the bathroom. Room service is available until 22:00. Cell phones, DVD players, air cleaners, and Bluetooth speakers were placed in our room. The free WiFi reception was excellent. There is no convenience store nearby.

Then the property is child-friendly.  Staff provides cribs, samue outfits, and amenities for small children if you request in advance.

How about In-house Facilities?

This is a universal design.  Wheelchairs are available for borrowing.  If you bring people with weak legs, you may want to inform the staff in advance as they can arrange a room near the lift.

Then there are indoor communal hot springs and saunas on 1F.  There is no communal outdoor hot spring.  All of them are open from 6:00-11:00, 15:00-24:00. *Please note that if you have tattoos, you may not be permitted to use the public bathing area.

The souvenir shop in the lobby lounge has coffee cups and tumblers, original soy sauce and ponzu, dressings, bath amenities, etc.

Then electric bicycles are available for borrowing.  You can go cycling around Lake Kawaguchi if you have time.

How about meals?

The sophisticated kaiseki food was simply wonderful. The portion tends to be average. All meals are served in a dining area.  The dining area has a spacious and open ambience. Partitions made of bricks and wood divide the space and make it look like a private room, allowing diners to dine in a relaxed mood. For breakfast, we were shown to a counter table by the window with a clear view of Mt. Fuji. If you bring small children, the staff may offer a private room.

Dinner starts between 18:00 and 20:30.  After dinner, don’t forget to visit the bar lounge.  The ambiance is cozy, romantic, and relaxed for adults.

Then you can choose either Western or Japanese cuisine for breakfast. We were happy to have breakfast with a view of Mt.Fuji. Breakfast starts between 8:00 and 10:00.

*Please note that inform the staff when you book a room with meals if you have any food allergies or dietary needs.  They probably wouldn’t be able to prepare alternative food if you request on that day.

As far as I know, there is no nice restaurant near the property. You may want to book a room including meals.

My impressions

The staff was friendly, helpful, and attentive. Overall, the price range would be bit high, but we were completely happy the whole time. Next time I would like to visit here in early summer or fall.
