What kind of onsen ryokan is Asaba Ryokan?
This is absolutely top-notch. It would be hard to compare with any place. If you are a connoisseur of Japan, you should stay here. Perhaps, if you are looking for small luxury authentic Japanese ryokans, I would recommend it. It’s like a samurai residence. We were absolutely overwhelmed by the beauty of architecture, interior, furniture, garden, and Noh stage, etc. It’s like you’re in another world. There are 16 rooms only. Most of the rooms have private indoor hot springs. Asaba Ryokan completely emphasizes private experiences for each guest. The ambiance is sophisticated, mystical, and elegant. The ryokan would be great for couples, families, small groups, or solo travelers. *A minimum age requirement of 7 applies.

Rooms I would recommend?
If this is your first time staying at Asaba Ryokan, I would recommend rooms with views of the Noh stage. We felt the luxury and authenticity at once while viewing the stage. The rooms are excellent Japanese minimalistic. The spring quality is simply wonderful, very soft, moist, and creamy. If you don’t want to sleep on Japanese-style mattresses in tatami rooms, you should book rooms with twin beds on tatami mats.
How about toiletries & in-room amenities?
All of the amenities are taken care of including enough toiletries, yukatas, pajamas, bathrobes, and a Japanese tea set, etc. Staff can prepare skincare products if you request. Also, a DVD player and a Bose speaker were placed in our room. The free Wifi reception was good. Room service is not available. Complimentary coffee, tea, and orange juice, etc., are available at the salon. You can fully enjoy viewing a beautiful traditional garden while having coffee. Also, it is illuminated at night. This is a very charming design expressing unique Japanese sensitivity. Words cannot describe it.
How about In-house Facilities?
Asaba Ryokan is not a perfect universal design. There is a lift in the building. If you bring people with weak feet, you may want to inform the staff in advance as they can arrange a room near the reception on 1F. Then there are wonderful indoor and outdoor communal hot springs. Also, there are two indoor private family hot springs that you can use for free whenever they are not occupied. All of them are open from 14:30-10:00 the following morning. It seems that most of the guests use private ones in their rooms only, but if you stay at Asaba Ryokan, you should try the communal outdoor ones. That’s really nice. *If you have tattoos, you may not be permitted to use the communal bathing area.

How about meals?
The authentic kaiseki food experience for dinner and breakfast was just divine. It may be challenging for the western palate, but it’s worth it. All meals are served in your room. *Please note that inform the staff when you book a room with meals if you have any food allergies. They probably wouldn’t be able to prepare alternative food if you request on that day. Then there wouldn’t be nice restaurants around the property. Local papa-mama shops are closing early. You may want to book a room including meals.
Most of the staff tend to professional. If you expect 5-star hotel service, you should stay here. Overall, the price range would be reasonable. It’s worth every Japanese Yen you spend. The experience is pure Japan and should definitely be tried. The best season to stay here would be in spring and fall. You can see breathtaking views while soaking in the outdoor bath.
